Some information to better prepare for the Final Exam (2022):

a) The exam has the same format as last year’s exam: it will consist of a total of four questions divided in two sections. You will have to answer one question from each section.

b) It is a closed book exam.

c) All questions carry equal weight.

d) Each question will in turn be divided into four or five points.

e) This year as you know the exam will be as last year - a Take-      Home exam. You should then be given some extra time.  Please try as much as possible to use an App like CamScanner to scan   and upload your answers to the exam questions as a single PDF file.

f)  The format and content of the questions will be quite similar to    those of the questions in the 2021 exam we discussed in the last  class (problem set 7) and in the midterm.  You may also look at     the questions of the problem sets discussed in the various classes of the course and at the ones in last year exam and midterm.

g) Hence there will be few multiple choice questions while other       questions will have the format of exercises, and will ask you to do some formal derivations, using simple algebra, as in the sets of     questions recalled in e) above. In both cases you may also be         asked sometimes to briefly motivate your answers, or comment   the results obtained, in one or two lines of text, explaining their   implications for the issues faced by financial intermediaries.

h) The topics will also be similar to the ones of questions you have already seen, no surprises!

i)   In particular, you should make sure you have a good                       understanding of the following topics (and more generally of the ones covered in the problem sets and the lectures):

the role of banks in screening projects and how to provide banks incentives to do so; risk aversion and agents’ demand for              insurance; duration, yield to maturity of bonds; interest rate risk and the effects of shocks to interest rates on the banks’ balance sheet; the fragility of fractional reserve banking, bank runs; the   role of equity as a signal of riskiness of a firm; debt overhang       (effects of current debt on future incentives); credit rationing.

This all means that to prepare the exam, you are advised to:

(i)      work through the slides of the lectures;

(ii)     read also the verbal parts of the slides and the textbook,

presenting descriptive elements and discussions;

(iii)    go through the sets of questions described in d) and make sure

to familiarize yourself with them and their solutions;

(iv)    The questions in d) should be enough for you to practice. In

case you still feel you need more practice questions, you may find them in the exercises at the end of each of the relevant   chapters in the textbook.
