Math 185 — Midterm 1

Question  1.   (2 points)   Suppose we reject for large values of a statistic T.  Define in one sentence the p-value, having observed a value t of the statistic.

Question 2.  (2 points)  Suppose we have a numerical sample and we want to know whether the distribution that generated the data is the uniform distribution on [0, 2]. What kind of test would you perform?  (Tests for that purpose have a specific name.) Give a couple of examples of such tests.

Question 3.  (2 points)  What is the plot of choice for one-sample categorical? Name it and explain how it is drawn.

Question 4.  (4 points)  An urn contains 150 balls, either red, blue, or green. We sample 50 balls with replacement from the urn, out of which 21 are red, 15 are blue, and 14 are green. Explain succinctly how you would test whether the urn contains an equal number of balls of each color (meaning 50 of each color). Say what test statistic you use and how you obtain a p-value.

Question 5.  (2 points)   Continuing with the same setting, what would you do differently if the sample had been drawn without replacement?

Question 6. (2 points)  In a study conducted in the mid-1980’s, researchers asked pregnant women with planned pregnancies how long it took for them to get pregnant (in number of menstrual cycles). The women were also asked if they smoked (defined as at least one cigarette a day). What is the underlying question here? Formulate that into a hypothesis testing problem.

Question 7.  (2 points)  Continuing with the same data, give a numerical expression for the chi-squared test statistic.  (No need to simplify the numerical expression in any way.)

Question 8.  (4 points)   Continuing with the same data, explain how to obtain a p-value for the corresponding test via permutation. How is this different from performing Fisher’s test?

Question 9.  (2 points)  We saw how to compute a confidence interval for the median at any desired level 1 − α. Explain (in one or two sentences) how you would use that to obtain a p-value for testing whether the median is equal to a prescribed value.

Question  10.   (4 points)   Explain how to compute a bootstrap estimate of the standard deviation of a statistic  D  = Λ(Xl , . . . , Xn ).  (Assume you are given a sample Xl , . . . , Xn  assumed to be IID from some distribution.)
