AUGUST 2021

1. Transformations and homogeneous coordinates

(a) Using the homogeneous coordinates matrix representation, demonstrate that the composition of two affine transformations is an affine transformation.    [5 marks]

(b) Explain in intuitive terms why what you showed in (a) is self-evident.    [2 marks]

(c) Compute the homogeneous coordinates matrix representation of the transfor- mation that maps the points (0, 1), (1, 0), and (2, 1) respectively to (7, 2), (5, 5), and (3,2).                                                                                                      [4 marks]

(d) Is the transformation in (c) unique? Explain your answer.                      [2 marks]

(e) Could the transformation in (c) be expressed using a transformation matrix in

Cartesian coordinates? Explain your answer.                                           [2 marks]

[Total marks 15]

2. Bzier curves

(a)  Figure  1  shows  the  control  points  of  a  cubic  Bzier  curve.     Sketch  the

curve.                                                                                                                [3 marks]

(b) A cubic Bzier curve is used to approximate the quadrant-circular arc shown in Figure 2.  Derive the expression for the curve if the constraints are that the start, mid, and end points of the arc and the curve should coincide, as well as the tangents of the arc and the curve at the end points.

(c) How might one create a compound Bzier spline in a piece-wise manner from low order Bzier curves, such that the spline exhibits C1 continuity?     [4 marks]

[Total marks 15]

3. Reflectance

(a) Derive the expression for the viewing angle at which the diffuse and specular

terms  corresponding  to  a  particular  surface  point become  equal.    You  can measure the angle from whatever reference direction you choose, but you must clearly state your choice.                                                                            [5 marks]

(b) Explain why your answer in (a) describes an innite set of directions.    [2 marks]

(c) If the diffuse and specular coefficients are equal to 1 and the shininess coefficient 2, by what factor does the range of viewing directions at which the specular component is greater than the diffuse change if the angle between the surface normal and the incoming light direction changes from 60c to 45c ?         [6 marks]

(d) Explain in intuitive terms why the answer to (c) makes sense.                [2 marks]

[Total marks 15]

4. Camera models

(a) A camera with the viewing direction along the z-axis has its optical centre at the origin of the world coordinate system.  If the camera’s focal length is f, what are the screen coordinates of the point that the world point |3 2 1]T projects to if orthographic projection is used?                                                                [2 marks]

(b) What are the screen coordinates of the projection in (a) if perspective projection

is used?                                                                                                        [2 marks]

(c) When might orthographic projection be preferred over perspective projection, and vice versa?                                                                                            [2 marks]

(d) The point in (c) and (d) represents the position of a moving object in an anima- tion.  The object moves in the direction away from the origin so that it is now twice as far as it was initially i.e. when it was at |3 2 1]T .  Express this move using a transformation matrix (2 marks).  Assuming the same camera setup as in (c) and (d) respectively, express the corresponding orthographic (1 mark) and projective transformations (2 marks) using matrices as well. Hence compute the corresponding screen positions (2 marks for each projection model).     [9 marks]
