MATH1050 Mid-semester exam

Part A

All questions in Part A are worth 1 mark.

1. Determine the value of h such that the scalar product of u =  .(╱) 8(5) .(、)  and v =  .(╱)1-6(2).(、)  is 32.

2.  Calculate the product of complex number 2 = 3 - 7i and its conjugate.

3. Determine the value of k where vectors c = 15i + 2j and d = -4i + kj are perpendicular.

z + yi

1 - i

5. Determine the value of z for which the vectors c = 10i + 4j and d = zi - 2j are parallel.

6. Let u = i + 2j - k and v = 4i - j + 2k. Determine the angle, in radians, between u and v. Give your answer to 2 decimal places.

Part B

There are 15 marks in Part B. Each of the following questions carries the stated number of marks.

Write your answers in the space provided.

1. Let the vertices of a quadrilateral in R3 be A(5.-2.4), B(7.-1.4), C(-3.2.-2) and D(-5.1.k). Determine the value of k for which ABCD forms a parallelogram.                                (2 marks)

 2.  Consider a sign suspended from the ceiling using two ropes in a V-formation (as pictured). The two ropes connected to the ceiling are of equal length and each make an acute angle with the ceiling of 10O .  Each rope withstands a tension of 64 N. Determine the mass of the sign to 2 decimal places. Include units in your answer.                                                                 (3 marks)

3.  Consider the function f (2) = 24 + à23 + 22 + J2 + d where 2 ∈ C.and à.从.J.d ∈ R.  The graph of f (2) is shown below. If 2 = 3i is a solution to f (2) = 0, determine the values of à.从.J.and d.

(4 marks)

4. An ant following a scent trail walks along the ground on a bearing of S60O E for 74 cm. The ant then walks a further 31 cm due West.  The ant then changes direction a final time, travelling another 102 cm South West before reaching its nest.  Find the displacement from the ant’s starting point to its nest, giving your answer to the nearest centimetre. Note: you are only asked to find the displacement, not the direction.                                                                    (3 marks)

5.  Find the smallest value of m ∈ Z+  for which 2 = -       +    i is a solution to 2m  = i.    (3 marks)
