MATH0015 Week 3 Written Assignment 1

1. Find a streamfunction for the motion with velocity field

u = 2y/(x2 + y2 ) − 2x/(x2 + y2 )yˆ

and sketch some of the streamlines.  Sketch in a solid body that is compatible with this flow.

2. The liquid contained within a finite closed right circular cylinder rotates about the axis zˆ of the cylinder so as to have velocity field given by u = Ω x r where Ω = Ωzˆ is the constant angular velocity of the cylinder and r = x + yyˆ + zzˆ .

(a) Prove that the equation of continuity and boundary conditions on the solid walls are satisfied. Remember to consider the boundary conditions on the top and bottom of

the cylinder and on the curved walls.

(b) What is the vorticity of the flow?

(c) Is there a streamfunction for this flow? If so, find it and sketch some streamlines.

(d) Is there a velocity potential for this flow? If so, find it and sketch some equipotentials.

(e) Is there a complex velocity potential for this flow? If so, find it.

(f)  Compare and contrast this solution with the solution of Q1.

3. Write down the streamfunction for an isotropic line source of strength 2πm in a uniform stream of speed U .  Take the origin to be at the source and the x −axis in the direction of the flow at large distance.

(a)  Show that there is a stagnation point upstream of the source and find its position.

(b) The flow approaching the stagnation from upstream splits to pass either side of a streamline through the stagnation point. Find an equation for the dividing stream- line.

(c) Find the points of intersection of the dividing streamline with the y axis.

(d)  Show that far downstream all streamlines are parallel to the x −axis.

(e)  Calculate the far-downstream separation of the two branches of the dividing stream-

line and give a physical explanation of the result.

(f) What is the velocity potential for this flow?

(g)  Sketch the motion distinguishing between fluid emitted from the source and fluid incident from upstream.
