Course Description

In this course, we will look at the gender gaps in different economic outcomes, why these gaps occur, whether the gaps represent any problems and why there should be deliberate policy measures to close the gaps. This includes gender gaps in labour, education and accessibility to credit markets. We will also look at whether covid-19 has worsened these gaps. We will explore some data sets as well as rely on empirical evidence on gender gaps in the different sectors.

Class Attendance

It is definitely much easier to get a good grade in this course if you attend class and follow the discussions. If for any reason you do not attend class (unavoidable circumstances), make a point to reach out to a colleague who can fill you in on the discussions that go on in class. It is not possible for me to meet during office hours for private tuition to cover missed classes.

Note A1: Ifyou miss the midterm exam, the weight of that exam will be transferred to the final exam. Note that the opposite is not possible- Ifyou miss the final exam, the weight cannot be transferred to the midterm. Documentation is not required if you miss the midterm.

Note A2: I will give a question(s) to the class at the beginning of the class. You will attempt the question on paper. You may work alone or in groups of 2/ 3 (preferred). Due to covid-19 restrictions and comfort levels, some of you may not be able to work in groups- understandable. Submit one paper per group, with the group members’ names indicated. We will discuss the responses in class, after the submissions. Each submission is worth 1 mark, up to a maximum of 5 marks.                       For the period when we will be having remote classes, we will still have the assessments on Thursdays (specific dates above). You can still discuss in groups of 2/3. You are required to upload your work

in the set-up drop box folder for the day. Note- One submission per group. Ensure that you indicate the names and admission numbers of the group members.

Note A3: Test on data analysis and description- In groups of not more than 3 students. You may choose to work alone.

The test will begin in class and may continue after class with some hours allowed for submission. If you do not make it to class on that day, you can ask fellow classmates to share the test questions. You

must submit within the required time.

If you do not do the test, a grade zero will be awarded.

Once the report is due, a 4-mark penalty will be applied for each 12-hour period after the due date and time.

We will most likely use data from Odesi. Use your WLU credentials to access data from Odesi. This

is the relevantpage. Add your credentials after clicking the blue ‘connect to resource’ button. We may

explore other data sources too.

Submit your work on MyLS on the dropbox folder labelled “Data Analysis Test” – One submission per group, with the group members’ names indicated.

Note A4: Group Assignment/ Presentation

In groups of not more than 5 students, select a paper. Do not use a paper that we have discussed in class.  From  the  paper,  summarize  the  main  contents  including  but  not  limited  to  objectives, methodologies employed, findings, conclusions and recommendations, policy relevance, criticism. Mention what extra work you would have done to improve the research if you were to repeat similar work. It is important to relate your work to theories and other empirical work that we have discussed in class.

Enrol yourselves into the various groups on MyLS by February 17th  .

Ensure that there is no duplication. That is, a particular paper cannot be discussed by more than one group. If you need my help to inform the class on the paper that you have selected, send me your paper title by February 4th. After February 4th, you are responsible for informing the class once you select a paper to avoid duplication. If there is any duplication, each group that uses the same paper will face a penalty of 2 points.

Prepare a presentation that should be uploaded on the “Group Assignment” dropbox on MyLS. You may use PowerPoint for ease of presentation.

Submitby 11:59 pm on the due date (March 14) The group members will face a 1-mark penalty for each 24-hour period after the due date and time.

On the first slide, enter the registration numbers and the full names of the group members.

Grading: This will be based on what is shown and discussed in class.

Collaboration in homework assignments (NOT CLOSED BOOK EXAMS) is encouraged as this promotes team spirit and group synergy, as long as originality is preserved.

Plagiarism is a serious offence.

Grades will be posted in MyLS.

APPEALS FOR REGRADING

Once you receive your midterm, test and assignment grades, in case there are any issues in the grading, feel free to let me know. You must do it in writing- email.

Explain the issue in details. If you need your paper/ a question to be regraded, I will have to remark all the questions in the paper.

Please note that you should not ask for a grade bump to raise your marks (unless you think there is an issue in grading and you want your paper to be regraded). Asking for your marks to be raised is unethical.
