GRADUATE TEACHING ASSISTANT: Halil Kurt, Zoom Office Hours:

TEXTBOOK: Dennis G. Zill, “Differential Equations with Boundary-Value Problems”, 9th edition.

This course participates in the ALL ACCESS PROGRAM, which includes access to WebAssign and the textbook in ebook format, beginning on the fifirst day of class. All Access is automatically provided for the class and is billed to your Auburn eBill. You will get instructions for this in an email from the AU Bookstore, including how to opt out of the program if you choose.

SYLLABUS: Topics will be selected from the following sections of the textbook: 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 2.4, 2.5, 2.6, 3.11, 3.2, 3.2, 4.1, 4.2, 4.3, 4.4, 4.6, 5.1, 7.1, 7.2, 7.3, 7.5.

MODE OF INSTRUCTION: I will use Zoom to deliver lectures, Canvas to post announcements and to store fifiles and videos, WebAssign for homework, tests and fifinal exam, and Honor Lock to proctor the tests and fifinal exam. I will lecture on the days and times indicated in the class schedule using Zoom, and I will record my lectures and will make them available to you through Panopto on Canvas. Every so often I will send you a ToDo announcement reminding you of what you need to do in the near future. That will include studying the lectures that I will deliver through Zoom as well as homework assignments that you will have to submit through WebAssign. I recommend that you watch the lectures and/or read the textbook before attempting to answer the homework questions. The number of times you may submit an answer to a homework question without penalty is limited to two; after the second answer you still have three more tries, but you will have a 20% penalty deduction per additional submission. However, if your score is zero your penalty will be 0 as well. Homework assignments must be answered by their due dates.

For homework, tests, and the fifinal exam, if there is no overall ”Submit” button that means that the score for each question will be recorded immediately after you answer it.

ATTENDANCE: Attendance to my lectures is not mandatory. Since they will be recorded you may watch them at your leisure.

ZOOM THROUGH CANVAS: You may join our scheduled class meeting in your Canvas course site by clicking Zoom on the course navigation menu on the left, then clicking the join button for the scheduled meeting for your class. For an introduction to Zoom go to https://support.zoom.us/hc/en-us/articles/201362033-Getting-Started-on-PC-and-Mac

ZOOM POLICIES: When we meet on Zoom, your attendance, attention, and participation are ex-pected. Zoom participation requires you to keep your video on and your microphone muted when you are not speaking. Although you may be participating from your domicile, our Zoom meetings are professional interactions. To the extent possible, please minimize distractions in the background. If you have any issues with sharing your video feed, adhering to this policy, or anything else related to your use of Zoom please notify me via email in the fifirst week of class. I am happy to consider and provide accommodations, but you will need to be in communication with me.

WEBASSIGN: To create a WebAssign account go to www.webassign.net and click on “I Have a Class Key” at the top right. Enter the following class key: auburn 9622 1976; that will also give you access to the online version of the course textbook. For detailed instructions on how to create an account, please read “WA–Access”. For an introduction to WebAssign, please read “WA–StudentQuickStart”, both of these fifiles may be found under “Files” in Canvas. AU will bill you for WebAssign, just as if you were buying a textbook. If you have any problems using WebAssign, the best way to get help is to contact their Customer Service.

HONORLOCK: Honorlock will proctor your exams this semester. Honorlock is an online proctoring service that allows you to take your exam from the comfort of your home. You DO NOT need to create an account, download software or schedule an appointment in advance. Honorlock is available 24/7 and all that is needed is a computer, a working webcam, and a stable Internet connection. To get started, you will need Google Chrome and to download the Honorlock Chrome Extension. You can download the extension at www.honorlock.com/extension/install .When you are ready to test, log into Canvas, go to your course, and click on your exam. Clicking ”Launch Proctoring” will begin the Honorlock authentication process, where you will take a picture of yourself, show your ID, and complete a scan of your room. Honorlock will be recording your exam session by webcam as well as recording your screen. Honorlock also has an integrity algorithm that can detect search-engine use, so please do not attempt to search for answers, even if it’s on a secondary device. Honorlock support is available 24/7/365. If you encounter any issues, you may contact them via live chat. Here is a video: https://youtu.be/wRWE-9PUquo

BROWSERS: You can connect to Zoom using Windows, Mac, Linux, Android, iOS (iPhone-iPad), Tele-phone, BlackBerry or H.323/SIP (Polycom, LifeSize type videoconferencing systems). WebAssign works best with Firefox, but any modern up to date browser should do. Panopto supports the latest versions of Chrome, Edge (Chromium-based and legacy), Firefox, Internet Explorer (11), and Safari. Honorlock requires Chrome. Canvas should be used on the current or fifirst previous major release of Chrome, Firefox, Edge, or Safari, but if you are going to take a test or the fifinal exam you should use Chrome, since Honorlock requires it.

TESTS AND FINAL EXAM: There will be three tests and a fifinal exam during the semester. They will be taken remotely, proctored through HonorLock and submitted through WebAssign. The approximate dates are the following: Test 1: 2/12, Test 2: 3/19, Test 3: 4/23. The average estimated time to complete the tests will be around 50 minutes, but I will give you 90 minutes to complete it. The fifinal exam date is Thursday 4/30.The average estimated time to complete the exam will be around two hours, but you will have two and a half hours to complete it. All schedules are given in Central Time. During the tests and fifinal exam you may use writing utensils, scientifific or graphing calculators, AND NOTHING ELSE. The tests and fifinal exam will be scored on a 0 to 100 points scale each.

GRADING POLICY: Homework will be worth 20% of the fifinal score, each test will be worth 20% of the fifinal score, and the fifinal exam 20% of the fifinal score. To get an A you need a fifinal score of at least 90 points. A fifinal score between 80 and 89 points will get you a B, a fifinal score between 70 and 79 points will get you a C, etc. All tests and the fifinal exam will be closed book, but you may use scientifific or graphing calculators. The fifinal exam will be comprehensive. Grades will NOT be rounded up at semester end, and there will be no extra work available for extra credit nor any bonuses.

STUDENT LEARNING EXPECTATIONS: You are expected to have all the equipment needed to be successful in the course, and you are expected to contribute to your own learning as an active and well–prepared participant. You should plan on spending the same amount of preparation and “in class” time on this course as you would if you were taking the course face–to–face. The learning activities for each week are offered in small chunks so you can accomplish reasonable amounts throughout the week.

POLICY ON HOMEWORK EXTENSIONS: Doing homework and taking tests in a timely and sequential manner is an essential part of the learning process AND IS MANDATORY. If you wish to request an extension for a due date, please do it using the form provided by Web Assign. It must be filled out completely: you must indicate the requested extension date and the reason for your request. Extensions may be granted more than once for the same homework or quiz, but never beyond 10 days after the original due date. Extensions will only be given for reasonable cause. Please work to avoid encountering technical difficulties near the assignment due dates by completing your work ahead of deadlines.
