SPRING 2022 SYLLABUS
1. OvERvIEw
The object of this course is to teach you:
(1) How to write mathematics like a professional, in the sense of good proof-writing, good paper struc- ture, and overall clarity.
(2) How to type LATEX code, generate images and diagrams, and produce good-looking mathematical documents and presentation slides.
Please bring a laptop to every class, and check the course page on HuskyCT frequently.

3. ONLINE PLAN
Whenever the course is to be taught online, the typical class time will become online office hours and the course will be officially asynchronous for those weeks. You will be asked to read a paper and/or notes I have typed up and complete a brief activity / small task on HuskyCT each week.

Graded work for this course consists of five papers and a variety of small tasks.

#1: Translate a handwritten paper to LATEX. #2: Discussion and proof of the quadratic formula. #3: Discussion and proof of any visual theorem with diagrams. #4: Biography of a famous mathematician and some of their work. #5: Expository paper on an advanced application of mathematics. Small tasks, usually short activities and very brief documents. |

Small tasks may be found on HuskyCT or will be done in-class. Small tasks are graded based on comple- tion. Two small tasks will be dropped at the end of the semester.
All final versions of papers are due April 15th, except for paper #5, which has a final version due date of April 29th. Papers will be graded following a rubric that will be provided and posted on HuskyCT. All submitted drafts will be given feedback and a tentative grade. Late draft submissions will have a 10% penalty. Late final submissions will have a 10% penalty. Per UConn W course policy requiring revised and edited work, if no revision addressing feedback is made, a paper may count as a zero regardless of any tentative grade given to a draft. No papers accepted past May 2nd.
5. OTHER STUFF
Plagiarism will result in an F for the assignment or even the course, at the instructor’s discretion. Students who require accommodations should arrange this through the Center for Students with Disabilities.
