Newsletter; Web Page Content, Website and Blog Critique, Social Media Posting on Your Skills of PR Writing
THIS BRIEF FORMS PART OF YOUR FINAL ASSIGNMENT
LECTURE REVISION
a. Review your lecture notes on Feature Writing and Desktop Publishing to do this next Task.
· Desk-top published newsletter worked on during tutorials and completed out-of-class
o This component requires you to plan, write and design a newsletter (1 x A4 page back and front or 2 sides stapled at top left). Your newsletter should be produced using a commercial Desk Top Publishing package (Microsoft Publisher).
o You will be writing the newsletter in „third person‟, so avoid using the terms “I”, “we”, “us”. The assignment will require you to interview students and/or lecturers within the public relations course. You may wish to show anyone you interview the work before you submit.
o ** Important ** Please supply on a separate sheet: (1) your aims in producing the newsletter; (2) the intended audience and, (3) any references used for production and research of content of the newsletter.
o The basic requirements for your newsletter are:
§ At least one “news” stories (on Visit Malaysia 2026) One “feature” article must be included. The feature will be related to practices in Public Relations. You will probably also need some shorter stories/a fact box as “fillers”. There should be at least two illustrations with captions. Normally, these would be photographs. If you cannot include your own photos, use clip art or other non-copyright material as a substitute, but photos are preferable. The final publication must be professionally presented, i.e. thoroughly proof-read, well written, and designed in a style appropriate for the readership audience.
b. Review your lecture notes and write 2-3 key points (about 150-200 words) about the role PR plays in relation to web pages and e-zines.
YOUR BRIEF - 3 PARTS
1) You are the public relations officer for a local Public Relations Agency. You have been asked to develop a website for their business. What steps would you take to develop such a website?
· Sketch a front page of the website
· Sketch a plan of the ‘branches’ or site menu for this website. Write a few words against each branch of what the content may be (text, images, etc).
· What steps would you take to develop such a website?
· Who are your likely potential audiences for this website?
DO NOT simply cut and paste from existing websites. Use your own ideas (research is useful).
Make rough notes first. This is a good habit to help you when in your final exam. This is hypothetical so you may invent details, provided they are credible.
2) Visit https://www.tourism.gov.my/
The above link is the official website for Petronas. Answer the questions given below:
1. Who are the key target audiences for this website?
2. What do you think the website is trying to achieve?
3. How does the layout/content achieve these objectives (or not)?
4. What photographs and graphics are used?
5. What improvements would you suggest for this website to improve usability?
3) Visit a “Health” blog site/Instagram/facebook page. There are hundreds to select from online.
View the content, layout and consider:
Who are the key audiences?
What key messages are conveyed in the content?
How would you describe the feel and look of the site?
Do you think specific objectives have been set for the blog? If so, what would they be? If not, please suggest 3-4 possible objectives.
Post a 50-100 word comment or response on the blog. You can write about anything you wish in relation to the look, content, or your overall reaction to the blog.
Print off some sample pages of this blog site including your posted comment to submit in your portfolio.
4) Develop a post on social media to publicize Malaysia as a country that defines “Malaysia Truly Asia” during this year where it is the Visit Malaysia 2026.
The post must have elements of a visual (photo/video), the post and hashtags.
You must mention which social media you are going to post this posting. You can choose either 1 or 2 social media.
The development of this post is aimed for you to show your writing skills on social media.
