ENG 1120 – Final Essay Instructions
Grade Value: 30%
The final essay requires students to engage in a critical, literary analysis of Larissa Lai’s novel, The Tiger Flu (2018). Your essay must develop a persuasive and specific argument on one of the topics listed below. Therefore, the essay must: a) make a specific arguable claim (i.e. have a thesis statement), and b) develop and support this thesis with detailed analysis and interpretation of the text’s content and/or form.

Please note that, if you so choose, you are permitted to write the essay on one poem from the syllabus instead of The Tiger Flu. In this case, you will be formulating your own essay topic. Please consult with me regarding this topic before you begin working on your essay. This will ensure you do not select a topic that is not appropriate for the essay and could negatively impact your grade (e.g. topic is too superficial, too complex for an essay of this size, not relevant to the course, involves major historical/sociocultural analysis instead of literary analysis, etc.).

Essay Requirements

  • 1500 words minimum, not including references and title page
    • Maximum length: 1500 + 10% = 1650 words
  • Include at least one (1) academic source (either a peer-reviewed journal article or a chapter from an academic book)
    • You may use additional sources to flesh out your argument where you believe it necessary (e.g. journal articles, reference material, dictionary definitions, etc.)
    • If you’re unsure whether a particular source is appropriate, please contact me and ask!
  • Use direct quotations from the text to support your analysis (essays with little to no quotations from the text will receive a poor grade).
  • Use APA format
  • o See the APA 7 guide on Brightspace, or OWL Purdue’s detailed guide for APA formatting: https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/apa_style/apa_formatting_and_style_guide/index.html
  • - Format your paper in size 12, double-spaced, Times New Roman font
  • - Submit your paper as either a Word document or PDF (Word document preferred) via the Assignments tab on Brightspace2

Essay Topics

Choose ONE (1) of the following topics for your essay. Your thesis statement and analysis of the text must focus on your chosen topic.
