Assessment Task

You will conduct a research project that spatially represents a house project of your own making. You will initially establish 3 criteria; a lifestyle, a location and a contemporary house model to be selected from a range of abstract models provided by the lecturer. The abstract model acts as an initiator ofspatial explorationsto be undertaken by the student. This assessment task isthe interim to the final Assessment 2B and is representative of preliminary investigations through conceptual sketching and light studies.

Context

As part of the development of any house project, the selection of a lifestyle and a location brings togetherideas around space and place; these ideasshould be underpinned by a personal journey of what a house could potentially represent as a profound and personalsituation for living in a private dwelling.
Instructions

The interim presentation of your house project should include the following:

Part 1: Conceptual Sketch Development

One of the basic ideas around presenting your work, in a most important way, the No. 1 idea, is the journey or the ‘evolution of the design’. It goes without saying a final, spectacular set of renderings will be what resonates in the memory of the client and the audience, what completes your project, and where the real fascination lies isin the way you established where you finally landed. Projects of this nature, no matter the journey, your experiences from your vague, rough start to a more refined and even sophisticated completion are where the interest lies. This includes the expression of both the good and rough workings. The best way is to record is through a visual diary; over time you will develop your sketch style and this will be like a signature in your conceptual work. But this takes time and huge amounts of frustration before you finally are happy with your sketching as an expression of design; this is all part of learning good habits.

Part 2: Light Studies expressing Light and Space

Sun reveals qualitiesregarding spatial interiors. Butsun as natural light, as the most powerful light, is ‘the giver of all presences’ (refer Louis I. Kahn) as it reveals everything and brings everything forth.

But light is not just light, it is shadow and it is darkness. So you are not just designing space through light, you are just as much designing space through a spectrum or range of gradations of light to dark. Thisis major understanding regarding your work asInterior Designer, shaping light, particularly daylight is what creates atmosphere, creates moments, and creates experiences. It is all about being alone, being in the moment, being in silence and being one with space; space as an expression of light. Express a series of light studies as a way of exploring spatial conditions that reveal the potential of your house project.

Part 3: Initial Design Development and Preliminary Renders

What is design development? One of the most surprising things about creativity is the notion of repetition. To do things over and over again! In other words, to persist through problemsin a kind of creative exhaustion; getting to that point in your design development where you are pushing through, finding that extra 5%, 10% or even 20%; that is where you push out your creative boundaries, creative limitations, and actually find ‘a new level of self’ as a creative personality.

Design developmentshould be a record ofthis creative struggle of iterating, amending, editing and polishing; ‘Design is not a miracle, it’s a struggle’ (refer Louis I. Kahn).
