Listening Journals 2 x 20%

Listening Journal 1 Due: Tuesday, Feb 24th - 5%/day late penalty

Listening Journal 2 Due: Friday, April 3rd - 5%/day late penalty

There are two listening journal assignments in this course that will require you to watch or attend several musical theatre or musical film productions.  Works selected for this assignment must be reasonably identified as ‘a musical’ and include instances of non-diegetic signing by principal characters (there are a few notable exceptions and if you think this is the case with your selection, please see me prior to completing this assignment).  Examples discussed in detail during lectures, or assigned for watching are not permitted selections for this assignment.

Each listening journal assignment has two options – see below.

Option 1 allows you to complete the assignment by watching three separate musical productions on a screen (film versions/adaptations or filmed stage productions) and completing the provided Listening Journal Form for each production. Assignments submitted with less then three completed Listening Journal Forms will be deducted 33% for each missing entry.

For Listening Journal 1, all works selected must have an original premier date prior to 1950. Failure to adhere to this requirement will result in a 15% deduction for each work outside the specified date range.

For Listening Journal 2:

1. Final Selections must have a premiere date 1950 or later.

2. Final Listening Journal Selections MUST be a stage musical, filmed stage musical, or a film adaptation of a musical – MUSIC FILMS ARE NOT PERMITTED (if you are unsure, ask me)

a. If you want to select a Disney show, you must access a filmed version of the stage performance – original animated movies are not permitted.

3. The following shows are inadmissible for the final Listening Journal Assignment:

a. West Side Story, The Music Man, Company, Follies, Sweeny Todd, Into the Woods, Phantom of the Opera, Les Misérables, The Lion King

Option 2 allows you to complete the assignment by attending 1 live music theatre production and completing the provided listening journal form.   Use of the provided templates is required for this assignment. If you select this option, you music include a scan of your ticket with your assignment submission. Failure to do so will result in this assignment being marked as Option 1 (meaning you will only get a grade for 1/3 entries).

There are no date restrictions on original openings for this option, however, you must attend the production at some point during this active term – you can’t complete this assignment for a show you have already seen or participated in.

You must indicate the option selected on your assignment – a dropdown box is provided for this in the Listening Journal Template.

Final Essay 30%

Due: Tuesday, April 7th - 5%/day late penalty

In lieu of a final exam, you will be asked to write an essay that incorporates specific references to shows, readings, lectures, and songs discussed in this course this term.  Specifically, you will write an essay (1200 to 1500 words) addressing one of the following questions:

1. How does non-diegetic music contribute to the narrative in musicals?

2. How has the relationship between musicals and popular music changed over time?

3. Has the function of music in musicals changed over time?

4. How has the sound and/or style of music in musicals change over time?

Regardless of the question you choose to explore, your paper must reference clear and specific examples.  Your paper should be structure using a clear introductory paragraph that concludes with a clear and focused thesis statement.  There will then need to be several (4-5) body paragraphs that explore, develop, and present evidence for your thesis.  Your essay should conclude with a clear conclusion that demonstrates your thesis has been clearly addressed.
