HOMEWORK #6 – REVIEW PAPER

HOMEWORK #6 entails researching and writing a review paper on a topic of geo-environmental exploration/sensing. The following are your instructions:

1. Based on the posted materials (geo-env. exploration and underground sensing), SELECT one technique/method to research in depth (i.e., either a conventional method or an emerging method such as WSN - wireless sensor networks, or Fiber Optic Sensors, etc).

2. Research the topic including AT LEAST 3 journal and/or conference proceedings articles (STRICTLY NO commercial web sites, Wikipedia, or other quick access information – unless they lead you to a scholarly article).

3. Extract the relevant information from the references and write a paper on subject covering: (i) description of the method, (ii) its historical development, (iii) current status of usage, (iv) pros and cons of the method, (v) potential for future development. The article should be in your own words. It is fairly easy for me to detect "cut and pastes"!

4. Your review article should be at least 4 pages of single spaced, 12-point font narration, including graphs, photos and tables. Individual photos, graphs and tables should not take more than quarter of a page per piece. There is no restriction how many of these you can use as long as you refer to them in your narration (i.e., "as shown in Fig. 1" or "as listed in Table 1"). The references for the figures, photos, tables should be cited in their captions.

5. The reference citing should follow the same convention followed in ASCE journals (i.e. (Smith, et al. 1998) in the text). List all the references with full information (i.e., all the authors, article title, year, journal name, volume, issue, page #s) at the back of your paper in alphabetical order by the last name of first author in each reference.
