Assessment Task
You will conduct a research project into the nature of dwelling as both a personal and philosophical narrative. This is to be represented through 3 posters that align with developing your own narrative on the house project for Assessments 2A and 2B. The personal narrative should relate to a room that has deep memories; whether relatively recent or in your past from earliest childhood or through your teen years. The philosophical narrative should be informed by readings on the nature of dwelling, that is, the idea of the house.
Context
Before the development of any house project, the development of a philosophy of design in the creation of the house helps shape a more informed idea of what is the true potential of the house.
This series of posters aims to generate clarity on the why of the house.
Instructions
The report/poster has three parts/pages.
Part 1:
Part 1/Page 1 of the report/poster focuses on a particular room/space associated with a residential house/apartment in your history and connects that space with ‘the idea of the room’ . Louis I. Kahn stated that ‘the room is the beginning of architecture’; in what way did this room/space in your life take on meaning that became profound and personal. This room/space is not limited to the interior (for example; living, dining room, bedroom or even kitchen); it could well be an outdoor room like a court, veranda or even a backyard.
Part 2:
Part 2/Page 2 of the report/poster focuses on how a room that connects to ‘a society of rooms’; as Kahn stated. How do rooms speak to each other, how do rooms interact to form a dwelling? This poster extends the room to a ‘the idea of the house’; what does it mean that ‘we build in order to dwell’ (Martin Heidegger); what makes us dwellers? The aim is to present both a personal and philosophical narrative that connects the room experience (your history) to the broader philosophical themes that surround ‘the idea of the house’ .
Part 3:
Part 3/Page 3 of the report/poster focuses on your own house project for Assessments 2A and 2B. This should showcase sketches, early modelling or light studies; it should also include a narrative that describes a vision of your house project. A vision that should take on a philosophical narrative in regards to the meaning of your house as a unique expression of residential living; again, the emphasis is on the nature of dwelling as a holistic experience.
