Group Project Guidelines
February 12, 2026
Deadlines
The following deadlines apply to the group project:
• Students must register their groups on Learn by Thursday, 26 February, 8:00 (Week 6).
• The project will be released on Monday, 2 March, 8:00 (Week 7).
• The submission deadline for the group project is Monday, 16 March, 8:00 (Week 9).
General Information
The group project is an empirical assignment to be completed using the tools introduced in the course. This assessment will allow students to develop skills in designing an identification strategy, estimating an econometric model, and interpreting the results.
The project will be carried out in groups of four or five students. Other group sizes are not permitted. Each group must register on Learn by the deadline stated above. Students who do not sign up for a group by that date will be randomly allocated either to existing groups with available places or to newly formed groups. The final group allocations will be published on Thursday, 26 February, at 14:00.
Each group must submit a single PDF file compiled from an R Markdown document. The PDF should include both the code and a written discussion addressing the project questions. It must be generated directly from the R Markdown file to ensure that all results are fully reproducible from the submitted code. PDF files constructed by copying and pasting code and regression outputs directly from the R console will not be considered a valid submission, as this undermines the reproducibility of the exercise.
In addition to the PDF file, each group must submit a compressed ZIP file containing the R Markdown file and the HTML file generated from it. Failure to include any of these three required files will result in a penalty of 5% applied to the overall project mark.
The submission deadline will be strictly applied. Standard Taught Assessment Regulations (TAR) apply with respect to extensions and late submissions. Upon late submission a penalty of 5 percentage points per calendar day, or part thereof will be applied, up to a maximum of 7 days after which a mark of zero will be awarded. Extensions will only be granted where there are substantial and properly authenticated exceptional circumstances (e.g. serious illness).

All members of the group will be awarded the same mark for the project by default. Exceptions can arise, for example, due to free-riding. For this project, the School of Economics free-riding policy applies.
Marking Guidelines
The projects will be marked on a scale of 0-100 by a marker and then moderated to ensure con- sistent standards apply across the course. The structure of the projects is that groups will have to answer several questions using a specific dataset with some project instructions. These ques- tions will be specific and ask students to discuss an identification strategy, estimate an econometric model, produce tables and figures, interpret results and discuss limitations. When marking student answers, we are looking at the following criteria:
• Structure and format: Do the answers have a good structure and logical flow? Is the for- matting clear and sensible? For example, are tables and figures clearly labelled, and can the reader understand what is shown in a table or plotted in a figure?
• Methodology, logic, and correctness: Do the answers show an understanding of the course content in terms of the applied methodology, and are the results, arguments, and discussions logically consistent and formally correct? Importantly, this includes whether the R code is correct as reflected in the PDF or HTML generated from the Markdown.
• Motivation, originality, critical thinking: Do the answers show that the group thought care- fully about the questions, and do they include their thoughts and critical reflections? For instance, have they raised sensible points when discussion the limitations of the empirical strategy?
