MA581A1 Probability, Spring 2026

SYLLABUS

Prerequisites: CASMA 225 OR CASMA 230 or CDSDS 122, or consent of the instructor.  The material covered in this course may help students prepare to take any standard Statistics courses such as BU’s CAS MA582, MA583 and MA575.

Course Overview:  Basic probability, conditional probability, independence.  Discrete and con- tinuous random variables, mean and variance, functions of random variables.  Jointly distributed random variables, conditional distributions, conditional expectation and variance, independent ran- dom variables. Methods of transformations, law of large numbers, central limit theorem, moment generating function.

Policies: Attendance at all lectures and discussions is required. Notes and lectures have top priority but extra readings are required as assigned.  Email use should be limited to brief messages and replies cannot be guaranteed - in particular, problem-solving assistance is for office hours and discussion sessions, not emails. This course does require good familiarity with Calculus so review that as needed!

Homework:  There will be weekly homework assignments.   Please check Blackboard regularly for the assigned work.  Homework is due every Wednesday starting the second week.  No late homework will be accepted.   The lowest homework grade will be dropped.   Submission is uploaded via Blackboard under Homework tab.  We recommend attending the lecture first, then doing the appropriate reading and problems.
