In this worksheet you will engage in a debate with Copilot chat on the following topic:

Who Had the Freer Society: Athens or Sparta?

Complete the AI Debate with Microsoft Copilot Chat in accordance with the instructions. To access the UCalgary Secure login to Copilot, follow this link.

Note: The use of Microsoft Copilot is required for this assignment. Your use of AI tools is restricted to the usage outlined in the assignment instructions. Any use of Generative AI beyond what is explicitly outlined constitutes academic misconduct.

The assignment opens several weeks before the deadline to allow you time to engage thoroughly with every required step, please consider this when deciding how to use your time. It is recommended to review the assignment instructions thoroughly as soon as the topic opens and decide what approach you wish to take to answering this question. You can keep this in mind when watching related lectures and completing textbook readings. Seek to write your side of the debate as soon as you have enough background learning from lectures and textbook readings to answer confidently. This will allow you enough time to follow up on AI sources and critically analyze the AI response before the deadline.

Begin the debate by writing a short opening statement (50 words max.) that clearly outlines your position. This should introduce your perspective and set the stage for your three main arguments.

Present your three arguments to support your position. Each argument should be approximately 100 – 200 words (not including in-text citations). For each argument:

· Clearly state your argument.

· Justify your point with evidence.

· Support your argument with in-text citations of the textbook (and lectures if you choose) in Chicago Author-Date style

· At the end of your debate section, provide a bibliography of all sources consulted in Chicago style.

Part 3: Evaluating Copilot’s Arguments and Use of Sources

Review the rebuttal created by Copilot and complete the following tasks:

1. Write a short paragraph (approx. 150 - 200 words) evaluating Copilot’s arguments. ( /5)

[Consider: are the arguments strong? Are the claims specific or too broad/general? Do arguments go beyond summary? Are arguments nuanced or oversimplified? Does Copilot cite appropriate sources for an academic debate (i.e. does Copilot cite the kinds of sources you would want to use for an essay – primary sources and scholarly secondary sources – or does it cite nonscholarly sources such as blogs, encyclopedia entries, commercial websites, etc.)?

[Consider: Can you identify the information in the source and their connection to Copilot’s claims/arguments? Did Copilot accurately interpret information in the source? Is the material from the source well-integrated into Copilot’s arguments?]

2) Critically evaluate whether the references provided appear to be the actual materials Copilot relied on when generating its side of the debate, or post‑hoc references (i.e. references added after the fact to fulfil the requirements of the prompt) that do not reflect the actual sources of information used by the chatbot.

[Consider: Does the source cited actually exist? Are the details in Copilots’ arguments vague or generic? Does Copilots’ argument flow naturally from the source’s ideas? Does Copilot reference specific page numbers, quotations, data, or arguments from the source? Are their mismatches between the citations and the information in the cited source?]

3) Discuss the implications of your findings for academic integrity, accuracy, transparency, and the use of AI tools in academic work.
