Group Assignment: ‘Sustainable Business Models’

(Re)design a business model for an organisation of your choice and provide recommendations to make it more sustainable using insights from the lectures, readings, and seminars

This assignment consists ofa group presentation, a handout of the presentation slides, and a group report.

You must choose an organisation that has the potential to be more sustainable but currently still causes significant negative social and environmental impacts. Make sure you choose an organisation about which you can find sufficient information (e.g., on company webpages, annual reports, press releases, etc.). You will develop a sustainable business model for the organisation using the tools from the seminars: Stakeholder Mapping Tool, Value Mapping, and the Sustainable Business Model Canvas.

You have to answer the following questions in your presentation and the report:

1.   Who are the organisation’s most important stakeholders, and why?

2.   In the current business model, what is the value missed, destroyed, or wasted?

3.   Using the Sustainable Business Model Canvas, what are the key features of the sustainable business model that you propose for the organisation?

4.   How do these features work together to create sustainable value for the organisation’s stakeholders?

5.   What could be obstacles to implementing the sustainable business model and how would you overcome these obstacles?

In order to answer these questions, you have to use the course material of this course unit, which includes the course readings, lecture slides and seminar material.

In addition to integrating academic sources (i.e., the course material and additional reading material) in your report, you should use a variety of other sources that contain information on the sustainability and the business model of your organisation, such as websites, annual reports, press releases, newspaper articles, trade and industry journals.

Instructions:

•  The presentation format used will be a Pecha Kucha (20x20). This means that you will have 20 slides and 20 seconds per slide. A template will be provided that you will have to use. It automatically transitions from one slide to the other thus making sure that it is exactly timed at 6:40 minutes. Please use this template and do not change the timing or the number of slides. Use the format creatively to effectively bring your main ideas across. For tips on how to do a Pecha Kucha, see:

https://24slides.com/presentbetter/what-is-a-pecha-kucha-presentation

•  You will need to email your presentation slides in PowerPoint format to the course coordinator ([email protected]) by 6pm on 08 March.

•  The maximum length of the report is 2000 words, excluding references and appendices, and you may apply the 10% rule.

•  Indicate the name of your group, and the student numbers of all the group members on the report.

•  The report has to follow the guidelines set out in a separate document, which is called: ‘How to Write a Management Report’ . These guidelines are available on Blackboard.

•  You should consider the PGT marking criteria and marking percentages available on Blackboard, in the folder ‘assignments’. These two documents are used by the course team to mark the report.

Weighting of marks for the Group Assignment:

The presentation is a formative assignments. You will be given feedback during the seminar on your presentation, to allow you to improve your report on the basis of this feedback. The mark of the group report forms 30% of the overall mark for the course unit.

Peer review:

It is assumed that in most groups all students will contribute equally to the assignment, and therefore each student in a group will receive the same mark. However, if there are concerns within a group that not all students are contributing equally, then within-group peer assessment may be used. To be eligible to use peer assessment, groups need to have raised their concerns with the course coordinator/seminar leader while working on the group assignment.

Due dates for the Group Assignment:

The presentations will take place during seminar #5 in week 6, 09 March 2026.

The deadline for submitting the group report in Canvas is Friday 13 March 2026 at 2pm.
