ASSIGNMENT

Documentary Film Series CW2

The assessment for this course involves you in making a documentary series, about an aspect of British Culture & Society. It is one piece of coursework but divided into three parts, which are separately assessed.

The documentary films must have at least two episodes, and each episode should be 3-5 minutes long developing the theme of the documentary film series.

This assignment will involve you working in a group on the same documentary film (series of episodes), but there needs to be a clear separation of responsibilities. Each group member is entirely responsible for one episode, which should develop the overall theme, in sequence. Identification of the theme is the group’s responsibility and connection to the theme and the sequencing is the individual’s responsibility (see assessment criteria 1, 2, & 3). Each group member will submit the media file for their own episode.

If you prefer to work alone, you will need to produce two linked episodes yourself. They need to be submitted as one file – but with clear separation (credit/titles).

Groups can be up to four students (maximum), who will produce one episode each of the group’s film, but episodes need to be clearly sequenced (and submitted separately by each individual). Episodes of the same film need to use the same graphics for titles, so the style is consistent.

Planning

You need to email me before Friday, 6th February to let me know who you are forming a group with – or that you elect to do this alone ([email protected])

A draft Screenplay, outlining the overall theme, episode titles & content should be submitted in writing in Week 7 (Group). This should introduce the theme/focus of the Documentary Series (300-500 words) and a further 200-300 words should be provided about each episode. The first episode should introduce the theme and refer broadly to subsequent episodes. The second or final episode needs to conclude the Series. Episodes between should connect to previous episodes and subsequent episodes. See Task Brief for Coursework 1. This is a group mark and submission worth 20% of your mark for British Culture & Society 2. The draft Screenplay will also require explanation via a short presentation (4-6 minutes), in the Week 7 class.

On Friday, Week 12, you and you group will need to present their documentary (episodes) explaining and justifying the approach and relevance to British Culture & Society as well as answering questions from the audience. This is a group mark and worth 20% of your mark for British Culture & Society 2.

See table of outline criteria below, for details of the other 10% (group) and the 60% individual mark.
