SEMESTER 1 EXAMINATION 2020/21

MATH3083 Advanced Partial Differential Equations

1.  Consider the PDE

u,xx + u,yy + u,zz + 2u,yz + 2u,xz  = 0.                          (1)

(a) Show that this PDE is hyperbolic, in the classification of second-order scalar PDEs. [12 marks]

(b) Show that this PDE is strictly hyperbolic in the time direction k := (z1, 1, 1).  (This question is independent of part (a).) Make sure that you explicitly address the case where · is proportional to k[13 marks]

2.   (a) Use the method of characteristics to solve the PDE problem

u,t + (cu2 ),x    =  0,    z/ < x < /,   t > 0 u(x, 0)  =  g(x) := ax + b,

(2)

(3)

where a, b and c  0 are real constants. Simplify your answer as much as    possible. Find for which values of a, b and c the solution becomes singular at t = ts  > 0, and find ts . [13 marks]

(b) Derive the inequality on uL and uR for which the Riemann problem

u,t + (u4 ),x    =  0,    z/ < x < /,   t > 0

u(x, 0)  =

(4)

(5)

admits a rarefaction solution. Derive this solution. Express your result for u(x, t) in terms of uL , uR , x and t only. [12 marks]

3.   (a) Show, using the definition of the derivative of a generalised function, that

(f (x)H(x))_ = f (0)δ(x) + f_ (x)H(x).                       (6)

(No credit is given for naively using the product rule.) [10 marks]

Find the causal Green’s function for the ODE

y˙ + tk y = f (t),                                         (7)

for any real k > 0. [15 marks]

4.   (a) Use the causal Green’s function for the wave equation in three space dimensions (which you can assume) to write down the causal solution of the PDE

u,tt z ∆u = eziωt f (n)                                  (8)

on free space as an integral over space and time. Then rewrite it as an integral over space only. [10 marks]

Make the ansatz

u(n, t) = eziωtv(n)                                      (9)

and substitute this into (8) to derive a Helmholtz equation for v(n). Extract from

your solution of part (a) a formula for v(n) as an integral over space, and use this to find the causal Green’s function for the Helmholtz equation. (In other words,     you derive the causal Green’s function for the Helmholtz equation from the causal Green’s function for the wave equation.) [15 marks]
