PHYSICS 3A
Winter 2022
Instructor: Arnold Guerra III, [email protected]
Lecture: MWF, 1:00pm - 1:50pm in BS3 1200.
Office Hours: Wednesdays & Fridays from 12:00pm – 12:50pm.
Office Location: Frederick Reines Hall, Room 4152
Course Website on Canvas: https://canvas.eee.uci.edu/courses/42309
Discussion Sections: All discussion sections will be held on Thursdays. You must be enrolled in a discussion section.
Textbook: Physics for Scientists & Engineers with Modern Physics, Fourth Edition, by Douglas Giancoli (Pearson/Prentice Hall publishers). An excellent reference book with lots of solved problems is The Schaum’s Outline Series book on “College Physics”, 9th Edition.
Homework: There are two components: 1. The first component uses Modified Mastering Physics for online homework. This component is worth 15% of the final course letter grade. Information about Modified Mastering Physics is
paid for it if you already used mastering physics for this same textbook at another college within
the last 2 years. Read carefully the registration instructions posted on the course website for
registering with Mastering Physics. The mastering physics Course ID for my course is
guerra59490. You may start registering yourselves in the course today!
2. The second component of the homework consists of a conventional set of problems. Your
solutions to these homework problems will NOT be collected. Students are expected to do the
homework in a timely manner and use discussion sections and office hours for questions on
homework and lecture material. Solutions to these homework problems are posted on the course
website.
No student will be given an extension on the Mastering Physics homework due date. No exceptions!!!
Calculator Policy: Smart phone calculators are not allowed.
“Quizzes”: There will be 5 “quizzes”. The quizzes will be given on Thursdays during
discussion section. The quizzes will be given on:
2) quiz #2 on January 27th (week 4)
4) quiz #4 on February 24th (week 8)
4 = all steps clearly written with correct answer, units included
3 = almost complete grasp ofthe solution with minor error either in an intermediate step or in
the final answer
1 = grasp of fundamental idea, but with no clear idea on how to proceed to the final answer 0 = essentially all wrong
This component is worth 10% ofthe final course letter grade.
“Midterm” Exam: There will be one midterm examination. It will be given during lecture time on Friday, February 4th (week 5) in lecture. The examination will be closed book and closed notes. Some formulas and values of fundamental constants will be provided. This component is worth 35% ofthe final course letter grade.
Final Exam: A comprehensive final exam will be given on Wednesday, March 16th, from 1:30pm – 3:30pm, in the lecture hall. The final exam will be closed book and closed notes. Formulas will be provided. If you miss the final exam for a “good reason” AND you are in “good standing” in the course, you will have to take the make-up final exam the next time that Physics 3A is offered at UCI. I don’t give make-up final exams! This component is worth 40% of the final course letter grade.
The course grade will be determined as follows:
15% Mastering Physics online homework
10% Quizzes in discussion sections
35% Midterm Exam
40% Final Exam.
I subscribe to the following approximate grade distribution:
A’s 17%
B’s 33%
C’s 33%
D’s and F’s 17%
Academic Dishonesty: Anyone who gets caught cheating in any ofthe exams will automatically receive a letter grade of F in the course.
Disabilities: Students should consult with the Disability Services Center if they feel some accommodation is needed. The center will notify all your professors what the problem is and how the midterm, final, and possible other difficulties might be handled.
