Learning Outcome addressed: 3 - Review and appraise distinct consumer research frameworks and consumer behaviour theories and concepts in relation to marketing management.

Aim of the Literature Review

The aim of this assignment is for you to learn how to review academic literature (i.e. theory) critically and to draw conclusions and provide recommendations for practice. You will be provided with one academic article which you will have to supplement with additional references. Conclusions you draw from the readings should be useful and specific to the client company.

You will need to take the following steps for this assignment:

(1)        Review the article "Critically reviewing literature: A tutorial for new researchers" by Karen V.

Fernandez (2019) (find this under “Modules”) to gain a good understanding of what a literature review entails.

(2)        Choose one of the following topics for your literature review – you will need to select your preferred topic (first come, first served):

•      Perception

•      Customer Loyalty

•      Attitudes

•      Brand awareness

•      Consumer Decision-Making Process/Buying behaviour

Critically analyse and review the article that is provided for your selected topic (find this under the “Assignment” tab for this assessment).

(3)        Conduct further (secondary) academic research on your chosen topic. Please use a minimum of 5 additional references in addition to the reading you have been provided with.

(4)        Draw conclusions from the readings on your chosen topic for the client company. (See guidelines below for further instructions)

General Guidelines

A literature review requires you to:

•     Use specific search terms in academic databases to find relevant, highly credible journal articles on a specific concept.

•     Select key articles to review based on the article scope and focus.

•     Read, summarise, and synthesise the knowledge from the articles to evaluate the body of knowledge as a whole.

•     Write a well-structured review of the literature that provides both an overview and critique of the body of knowledge on your chosen topic, and a discussion on the relevance of this topic for the client company.

Your mini literature review might include:

- Introduction:

• A brief yet clear understanding of the chosen topic, e.g. definition, scope etc..

- Literature Review:

• An understanding of current literature (i.e. what are current studies saying about the topic?)

• An understanding of any conflicts” in the literature about the topic (i.e. what does one author say compared to another)

- Methodology:

• An understanding of the different research methods that were used in the literature. Explain these further.

- Implications:

• Suggestions for managerial implications (e.g. how is this important/relevant for the client company? What conclusions can you draw that will be useful for the client company? Would the methods used in the

literature be a useful approach for the client company?)

- Conclusion:

• A brief summary of key findings (i.e. What have you learnt? What is the relevance for the client company?)
