ASSESSMENT BRIEF OVERVIEW - This module introduces you to the strategic challenges and emerging opportunities shaping the global fashion landscape. You will deepen your understanding of the social, cultural, and economic forces that influence why fashion businesses succeed—or fail. In this context, fashion extends beyond clothing. You may choose to explore connected industries such as hospitality, wellness, interiors, technology, music, beauty, skincare, or automotive. You are encouraged to focus on a market, sector, or role that aligns with your career ambitions.

PROJECT REQUIREMENTS Assessed Learning Outcomes: A1, A2, B1, B2, C1, C2, D1 You will produce is a 5-minute MP4 presentation of a Visual Research Abstract (VRA). You must appear on screen. You may record on a smartphone, but you must use post-production to ensure a professional finish. Your visuals should clearly support your abstract.

PROJECT FOCUS - This should critically investigate a current critical issue within the fashion sector and establish a theoretical foundation for your Major Project (ARTD3066). You are not required to solve the issue—  this module focuses on defining, framing, and researching it in preparation for your Major Project. Your task is to identify a critical issue affecting the wider fashion ecosystem, formulate a research question suitable for a 5,000- word Major Project, and demonstrate your understanding of the issue’s relevance, context, and academic foundations.

To get started, you could ask yourself What isn’t working in the fashion industry today? What problems are being overlooked? What opportunities remain untapped? Your focus may be related to:

. Fashion & Individual Identity: Individuality, gender, the male gaze, feminism, body image, modesty, sexuality, symbolism, uniformity, celebrity influence, icons, trend adoption.

. Fashion & Culture: Anthropology, zeitgeist, art history, authenticity, maternity, environmental concerns, local vs global tensions, technology, subcultures, tribes.

. Fashion & Society: Age, gender, ethnicity, class, taste, heritage, behaviour, consumption, sustainability, communication, politics, semiotics.

. The Fashion System: Production, promotion, retail, innovation, consumer demographics and psychographics, ethics, forecasting, branding, events.

3. Research Methodology - Identify key thinkers, theorists, or frameworks you will draw upon. Outline proposed case studies. Describe your approach: secondary research, and primary research you may need (interviews, surveys, etc.).

4. Research Limitations - Identify challenges, constraints, or gaps you may encounter.
