CMNS2600 AUDIENCE PARTICIPATION AND INTERACTION

Assessment 2: Criteria for the Audience Data Analysis

Worth 30%, 1500 words

Due Date: Friday 20 March 2026 (2359 hours)

Submission details: To be uploaded to Canvas

Working in groups of 4 or 5, you will design and conduct a basic audience research project (using a survey as your data-gathering instrument and recruiting from the CMNS2600 cohort for your research participants), and report on your findings.

The recommended application for building your survey is Google Forms:

https://docs.google.com/forms/u/0/ (it is free, allows unlimited responses and usefully exports to Google online apps. See https://support.google.com/docs/topic/9055404 for instructions on using Google Forms.

Potential topics will be discussed and negotiated in tutorials.

We will also be workshopping these steps:

1.   Designing a survey

Work with your group members to identify a topic and a key research question within the field of media and communication. Design a survey that will take approx. 10 min. to complete, and which will generate data from your respondents (i.e., your classmates).

2.   Collecting responses from classmates

Generate a survey URL that you can post into the Canvas discussion ‘Surveys’, with a clear title  and simple description (and appropriate image) to help recruit participants from the course cohort. (We will also encourage all students to complete surveys from other groups across the course.)

3.   Analysing and presenting your findings in a report.

Work through your data, identify what your key findings are, and the clearest way to present these. Your final report needs to

•   introduce and explain your chosen topic, including with references to position your small project in relation to existing published research

•   explain your approach to designing your survey

•   present and discuss your key findings

•   critically reflect on your project

•   include a copy of the survey questions as an appendix

Please ensure all group member’s full names are listed on the first page (and if possible, could each group member submit a copy of your final report to Canvas).

Marking criteria

Your report will be graded on the following:

•   Quality of your research design – justification of your selected topic, positioning of this topic within existing research, and how you have designed to survey to explore this (up to 10 marks)

•   The quality of your discussion of findings and critical reflections – how effectively you present and discuss any key patterns and/or insights revealed by your survey results (up to 15 marks)

•   Overall report presentation (up to 5 marks) – structure, use of appropriate visuals / data presentation, and quality of grammar and spelling.
