What is an Infographic?
An infographic is a visually captivating image that depicts data or information in a way that makes the topic easy to understand and captivates the audience. Depicted below is an infographic on the impact of Climate Change on Coral Reefs by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
Assignment
In this assignment, you will research one of the water-related themes listed below and create an Infographic of your findings. The purpose of this assignment is to increase your understanding of a water-related issue, to build research skills, and to present your research in a visually captivating format.
This assignment will be done in two parts: a draft infographic, and your final version.
Themes
You must choose one of the water-related themes listed below. You must then narrow down its scope and address a more specific topic that still covers the main theme. For example, if the chosen theme is “Climate Change” you may choose to focus on how climate change affects the water resources of one city, one state/province or one country (e.g., “Climate change will affect the Greater Toronto Area’s water resources ”). The topic is entirely up to you, as long as it fits within one of the themes.
This term’s themes are as follows:
• Climate Change
• Water and Pollution
• Water in Africa
• Water and Energy
• Water and Canada’s First Nations
Please note: a mark of zero on the entire infographic and its draft will be given if the topic selected is not relevant to the themes above, and in general has no relevance to freshwater.
While software such as PowerPoint can be leveraged to create your infographic, you can use free online tools to create an Infographic on your chosen topic. Make sure you choose a resource that will allow you to save your Infographic as you develop it, and that allows you to download the final product in a good resolution and appropriate format for submission (for example, as a .pdf).

Required Elements and Referencing
You must include the following elements in your Infographic:
Title - the infographic must contain a clear and relevant title.
Topic Statement – an introduction to the topic as well as a clear statement addressing the water-related issue.
Visuals – supporting information on the water-related issue and a presentation of your research. All information must be referenced. Your Infographic must also include at least:
• 1 geographic map. More information here about what is a geographic map: Geospatial Literacy Modules.
• 1 graph, chart, or table (e.g. : line graph, bar graph, data table, pie chart), i.e., a graphical representation of data.
• Note: The above items cannot come from lecture notes
Text – There must be text supporting the visuals in your Infographic. There is no word limit on the text, but your entire Infographic should present well, and text should be legible when printed on standard or legal-size paper (8.5” x 11” or 8.5” x 14”). Information must be presented in your own words (i.e. : paraphrased) and must be cited appropriately (footnotes are acceptable). Information included in the infographic must be relevant to the topic, be scientifically accurate and use appropriate/scientific terminology.
Solutions/How you can Help – the infographic must include solutions to or ways to mitigate the water-related problem.
References – a list of references used in your research. All information in your Infographic must be referenced, including the sources of graphics/pictures/etc. (footnotes are acceptable). You must also include the reference list within your infographic (usually depicted at the bottom). For the text portion alone, you must use at least 5 reputable sources of information. Lecture notes do not count as sources of information. A URL shortener can be used to reduce the amount of space taken by the list of references, but make sure that the link created is stable (i.e. : it always brings the reader to your intended source). If you only provide shortened URLs in your reference list on your infographic, please be sure to include a full citation list as a separate .docx file when submitting your assignment. Lecture notes do not count as sources of information.
Size – must fit on 8.5” x 11” or 8.5” x 14” paper. Text must be legible and graphics of good quality when printed at this size.
Note: Remember, your Infographics are visual representations of scientific data. There should be a good balance of text and visuals in your final product (see the Infographic included at the start of these guidelines).
Refer to the Rubric under “Assignment Evaluation” section at the end for the final Rubric and additional expectations.
Referencing
• You must fully reference within the text all information presented using the author, date using the Harvard referencing system.

Part A: Draft Infographic
(2.5% of your grade)
A full draft will be evaluated, to make sure your infographic is on track to meet all the requirements before the final version is submitted. Therefore, the draft’s format and organization will need to be identical to that of the final version of your infographic. Your TA will provide at this point basic feedback on your draft.
Your draft will be due in the Draft Infographic folder on A2L, under “Assessment>Assignments”, on February 5, 11:30 p.m. EST. You should organize your draft following the same guidelines as for the final version.
Your draft will be evaluated for the following elements (10 marks):
• Does the Infographic have a good title?
• Does the Topic statement clearly introduce the issue? If not related to freshwater, the entire draft will be given a mark of zero.
• Is the information accurate and relevant?
• Is there a solution proposed to the issue?
• Is there a map and chart/graph/table, with accompanying descriptions?
• Is the data mostly presented with high-resolution visuals?
• Is there a good balance of visuals and text?
• Is the Infographic eye-catching with a good colour scheme?
• Is the information easy to read and logically organized?
• Are there format, spelling, grammar, or bibliographic mistakes?
Please note: when you will review the feedback from your TA, consider that only specific, critical aspects of your infographic were evaluated to make sure that there were no major, glaring problems. The final evaluation will consider not only these aspects but also smaller details that they may not have been considered during marking of the draft.
Please note: that at this stage you will only be submitting the infographic itself, without the full, detailed list of references that must accompany it at the final stage, or the file with just the text showing on your infographic.
Part B: Final Assignment Submission
(7.5% of the grade in the course)
You will make one last series of improvements to your infographic and finally submit it.
You will submit the final version of your assignment to the Assignment box on Avenue in TWO Formats
i. Submission of Infographic to Avenue Assignment folder: You must submit your infographic to the Assignment box on Avenue to Learn. Please note that while the Avenue dropbox accepts the following formats: html, doc, docx, hwp, odt, rtf, wpd, txt, ps, pptx, ppt, ppsx, pps, xls, xlsx, gdoc, PDF is preferred.
ii. Submission of Text to Avenue Assignment box: You must submit a
.docx file of any text in your infographic to the Assignment box on Avenue.
Submissions to Avenue will be evaluated for plagiarism using Turnitin.com. A Similarity Report will be generated, which evaluates the similarity of your work to billions of documents on the internet and other submitted works in the Turnitin repository. Plagiarism will not be tolerated. Any Similarity Report above 10% will be investigated.
PLEASE NOTE: If your sources/reference list are being highlighted in your Infographic Text .docx file in Turnitin (not applicable to your infographic visual), resulting in a higher similarity score, please remove your sources from your text document and submit your sources as a separate, third document.
This will mean you will submit the following:
• 1) Infographic Visual with sources (see acceptable formats above)
• 2) Infographic text (without sources) as a .docx
• 3) Reference List as a .docx
Everything must be submitted on Avenue by March 26, 11:30 PM EDT. If any of the files above is missing, you will be getting a mark of zero.
You must complete the Academic Integrity Quiz (due March 26, by 11:30 p.m. EDT) to gain access to the drop box.
