Assignment #1 - Initial Business Model and Value Proposition Canvases

Due Date:  Tuesday February 3, 2026

This is a team assignment and one final document should be submitted per team.

In this assignment the team is tasked with creating an initial business model or lean canvas and an initial value proposition canvas for their proposed business idea.   The hypotheses in both canvases will be tested during the remainder of the course.

The deliverables for assignment are as follows:

1)  A Business Model Canvas or Lean Canvas that shows your initial ideas of what each of the 9 segments of the business model might be.  (10 marks)

2)  A short paragraph explaining each of your hypotheses in questions 1 (18 marks)

3)  A Value Proposition Canvas that shows how your initial proposed solution addresses your perceived customer pains, desired gains and jobs that need to be done (8 Marks)

4)  An initial ranking of your perceived customer gains and customer pains (4 Marks)

5)  A summary paragraph that explains (5 marks):

a.   The problem you think needs to be solved

b.  Who you think has the problem

c.   Why the current solution(s) don’t solve the problem

d.  Your initial proposed solution

e.  Who you think the paying customer will be

6)  A list of who you should be talking to about your idea and how you will reach them (5 marks)

7)  Write a few points for each of the segments on the Lean canvas or Business Model Canvas (whichever you didn’t choose for question 1) that weren’t included in your answer with respect to your proposed business (5 marks)

8)    Explain why a startup might use a lean canvas instead of a business model canvas (5 marks)

The deliverables are to be assembled into a single PDF document.   Electronic copies of this document should be submitted to the assignment Dropbox in Avenue to Learn by the end of the day Tuesday February 3rd, 2026.
