Course Name: Lean Startup

Course Code: 2X03

Session Offered: Winter 2026

Calendar Description: Introduction to lean methodologies of building a successful start-up business, including market validation, analyzing market potential for start-up ideas, establishing a business model and "failing fast." Students will learn how to test business ideas and hypotheses with customers and stakeholders.

Course content:

2X03 content will include, but not be limited to, business model generation, customer development methodology, market analysis, intellectual property, and other tools used in developing and evaluating a startup opportunity. The course will employ a variety of learning methods, including lectures, online content, customer interviewing and engagement, guest speakers and team presentations

Class Culture:

Lean Startup courses are typically taught in a flipped classroom format. This class will be a mixture of online lectures by the instructor, virtual guest speakers and online lessons-learned presentations from teams as they develop and validate their business models. Students are encouraged to participate by asking questions of the instructor, guest speakers and their classmates. We will challenge each other with the goal of better shaping the learning experience.

We will subscribe to the Lean Startup Manifesto which assumes:

There are no facts inside the building so get outside (in our case “reach out”) and talk to customers

Failure is an integral part of learning

Focus on the most critical learning objective to move your idea forward

Design experiments to test and validate your hypotheses (guesses) and make continuous iterations and change course as necessary

Textbooks and Supplemental Information

There is no required text for the course. Lean Startup Courses taught around the world are based on The Startup Owner’s Manual (by Steve Blank and Bob Dorf) and Business Model Generation (by Alex Osterwalder) – these are good books if you decide to pursue a startup. The Lean Startup (by Eric Ries) is an enjoyable read but also optional. References to free supporting online from the Lean Launchpad and content on Udacity.com will be given for related lectures.
