Course Objectives: Upon Completion of the course, the student will be able to:
1. Solve dimensional analysis problems involving metric SI units of measurement as well as exponential notations
2. Describe matter in terms of elements, compounds, atoms and molecules and compare physical and chemical changes
3. Understand the basics of chemical bonds and chemical formulas
4. Explain the mole concept, use it to solve stoichiometric problems.
5. Be able to identify basic reaction types, and differentiate between them.
6. Understand the First and Second Laws of Thermodynamics to predict whether reactions can occur under certain conditions.
7. Describe the structure of atoms and use the Periodic Table of the Elements to determine the structure and electron configurations of any atom.
8. Know chemical bonding and be able to predict the structure and properties of compounds
9. State the relationship between temperature, volume and pressure and solve problems using gas laws.
10. Understand Lewis dot structures and VSEPR, and be able to use them to predict physical and chemical molecular properties.
