Assignment
The aim of this Assignment is to test the students’ knowledge about the following learning outcomes:
Undertake, with critical awareness, analysis of complex financial information and communicating the outcome ofgroup work effectively.
Use Financial Databases in order to connect theory with the practical application.
The final date for this assignment by which work must be submitted is 20th January 2022 at 16:00. Students may submit work at any time prior to these deadlines, and are encouraged not to wait until the final deadline.
Question
You are reporting to a UK based Hedge fund who is considering investing £1 billion for five years, into two markets. The CEO has requested that you provide answers to the following key questions.
Instructions
1) You have been assigned the task ofwriting an essay that will explain to the top management team assigned to this project, the following:
a. What is FinTech. (10 marks).
b. What do FinTech companies do and what has been the criticism (if any) of their activities? (20 marks).
c. Discuss using no more than 600 words and no less than 300 words.
2) Choose one FinTech market.
a. From the following list of countries: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, China, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Pakistan, Philippines, Poland, Romania, Russia, South Africa, Thailand, and Turkey.
b. Choose also one FinTech market from the following list of countries: Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Sweden, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Switzerland, UK and US.
c. Describe the conditions of your chosen FinTech markets. Discuss using no more than 900 words and no less than 500 words. (20 marks)
3) You should download five years ofmonthly closing prices for your chosen markets; stock market indexes ENDING ON YOUR MOST RECENT BIRTHDAY. The data could be
obtained from Bloomberg, FAME or any other database given that you cite the
database you have used.1 Explain the choice of your benchmark indexes (10 marks)
4) Explain which index you think outperformed the other during the selected time period and why (10 marks)
5) You should download five years of monthly closing prices for the relevant market risk-free rates. Discuss the choice of your risk free rates. (15 marks)
1 Bloomberg is available on 12 PCs in Derwent Bloomberg Suite 021 on the ground floor. The Bloomberg PCs have a multi-coloured Bloomberg keyboard, and each computer has two screens.
6) Briefly discuss the recent macroeconomic performance ofyour chosen countries, using no more than 400 words. (15 marks)
7) Evaluate your results. Produce a report explaining your workings and findings; based on what you have learned in this module explain and discuss in detail. Use specific reasons and examples to support your answers.
The better your essay to this group, the more likely you are to become a voting member ofthe top management team.
Requirements for the assignment
The assignment is to be 3000 words (± 5%) long excluding title page, tables, figures, references and appendices. Your text should be double-spaced using size 12 Times New Roman font. Standard margins should be used. Assignments which don’t meet these requirements will not be accepted.
Each essay should have the following:
1. A title page which includes, the given question and authors’ names.
2. An abstract of less than 100 words. This should summarize your essay, and be on the title page.
3. Conclusion (approx.150) - summary of findings.
4. References – please note that all and only cited papers should be in your references. Please follow the Harvard referencing style. Failure to reference properly will result in marks being deducted.
5. Pay particular attention to how headings and sub-headings are used when you present your work. Also note how papers are referenced and cited. Furthermore, make sure your tables and figures follow the style ofthe Journal of Financial Economics.
6. You must submit an Excel file containing your data, along with your submission.
7. You should use your student number to identify your Excel file.

For a mark of 50% - 59%:
The discussion is mainly descriptive and lacks any critical insight.
Analysis ofthe chosen topic is limited and recommendations are unsubstantiated.
Although there is some understanding of the main issues identified, the assignment is lacking in analysis and coverage.
Reading and research whilst balanced and thorough appears nonetheless limited. Appropriate presentation skills are illustrated.
For a mark of45% - 49%:
The discussion provides an inadequate analysis ofthe chosen topic.
In addition the assignment is somewhat unstructured with no critical comment provided. Although the discussion arrives at a considered and balanced conclusion, little or no justification is offered.
There is some relevant referencing, with the discussion containing no significant errors and/or omissions.
However, there is little evidence of reading/research, and concluding comments are somewhat limited and inconclusive.
Limited presentation skills are illustrated.
For a mark below 45%:
The discussion fails to provide any adequate evaluation ofthe chosen topic. The assignment is limited and unstructured and the analysis poor.
