ENG6361 Second Language Research Methods

Final Assignment

Semester One 2025-2026

Due Date: 7 December 2025 (1st  Sunday of Dec 2025)

The assignment is worth 70% of your final grade

l Select ONE of the papers for final assignment uploaded to Moodle.

The assignment is in two parts, A and B. You MUST answer BOTH parts of the assignment.

Part A requires you to write a summary of the paper.

Part B requires you to write a critical review of the paper. Remember, a critique discusses both strengths as well as limitations of the paper.

l As a rough guide, you should allocate a greater proportion of your assignment to the critical review than to the summary.

l The following guidelines are designed to assist you complete both parts of the assignment.

l The list of issues / questions described below is not exhaustive and there may be additional issues and questions that you want to consider.

l In answering these questions you must briefly explain / justify your answer.

l If in doubt consult one of the lecturers on the course.

Part A: Summary (approximately 500 words)

This part should appear similar to a long abstract. You are required to describe the study in some detail using the pattern usually associated with an abstract. One difference between this part of the assignment and the abstract of a published paper is that you will provide more details.

Part B: Critical Review (approximately 1000 words)

In part B, it is suggested that you discuss issues arising in response to the following questions:

1.     The overall structure of the paper.

l Is the paper well laid out and organized?

2.     The Introduction

l Is the purpose / significance of the study clearly identified?

3.     The Literature Review

l Does the literature review follow the expected format leading to a research question(s)?

l Are the research questions clear and workable?

4.     The Theoretical Framework.

l Has the theoretical or conceptual framework been identified?

l Is the framework adequately described?

l Is the framework appropriate?

5.     Methods

l Are the methods appropriate to address the research question(s)?

l Did the researcher provide background information about the partcipants?

l Did the researcher test the data collection instruments before using them in the study?

l Did the researcher collect enough data to justify their findings?

l Are the methods of data collection AND data analysis described in sufficient detail for you to trust the findings of the study?

6.     Sample

l Is the sample method and sample size identified?

l Is the sampling method appropriate?

l Were the participants suitable for informing research?

7.     Ethical considerations

l Are the ethical issues adequately addressed in the paper?

8.     Results / Findings

l Is the organization of the results / findings section appropriate to the methods of data collection and analysis?

l Are all of the data mentioned in the methods section reported in the findings section?

l (Quantitative study) Is the statistical analysis of the data carried out well and reported clearly?

9.     Discussion

l Is the interpretation of results reasonable?

l Does the author provide interpretations for all key findings?

l If applicable, does the author take account of results that do not support their arguments?

l Has previous literature been mentioned? Has the report been placed in the context of what was already known of the phenomenon?

l Has the original purpose and / or research questions of the study been adequately addressed?

10.   Conclusion/ Implications and Recommendations

l Are the importance and implications of the findings identified?

l Are recommendations made to suggest how the research findings can be developed?

l Are limitations to the research adequately discussed?

11.   Overall

l What suggestions do you have to improve the research and / or the writing up of the paper?
