ECON 260 (3) Environmental Economics

Course Description:

This course deals with the relationship between the economic activity and the environment. The main course objective is to familiarize students with major current environmental problems in terms of their causes, consequences and possible solutions. Students must be able to comprehend the existence of market failures due to externalities and public goods, and the use of selected market and non-market regulations of environmental problems. The course also pursues discussion on issues related to global climate change and several specific instances of environmental problems currently faced around the world.

Class Time:

Tuesdays & Thursdays 7:30pm-8:50pm, Virtual

Technology Requirements: For all courses, it is mandatory to have a laptop computer with a webcam, microphone, and reliable internet connection.

Essays cannot be written properly on a cell phone. There are also more technical issues with phones, including incompatibility with some of our systems if you run into issues with your phone during a quiz, lab or exam, you will not be eligible for any appeal or extension.

Course Objectives and Learning Outcomes:

This course provides students with an economic perspective of environment issues. During this course the student will:

Apply economic principles to analyze specific environmental problems and issues.

Understand the static, dynamic and sustainability criterion for economic efficiency.

Identify the sources of market failure (inefficiency) and the economic principles of pollution control.

Understand the use of various instruments developed by economists to deal with environmental problems and to evaluate alternative courses of action for policy makers.

Apply economic analyses to practical situations involving environmental regulation
