MUSIC IN FILM

AUTUMN SEMESTER, 2025-2026

PROJECT

Produce the film score for a selection of short film(s),from preexisting music.

1.The student should produce an original film music score of an existing short film or an excerpt/selection of scenes from a feature-long film.

2.The length of the film/excerpts should add to at least 10 min.

3.Students can choose any pre-existing film to their liking or use those from the provided short

film bank.If the selected film has preexisting music,the student should remove it,to produce  their own scoring(NOTE:If the student decides to leave a section of the pre-existing music-e.g. as diegetic music-the decision has to be argued in the subsequent critical analysis).

4.Students can use any music for their scoring(i.e.choose from any pre-existing music,style or

genre).The selected music should be added/mixed/dubbed to the film,using video editing software.

5.The choice of music should show understanding the ideas,film music theories,uses of film music,genres and historic evolution discussed in class.

6.Students should submit a word document including:

a.Name  and  student  number

b.A     stable  link  to  the  film/excerpt  with  the  student  score. It  should  be  available  to

watch/stream online (preferably Google Drive).The video link should be private and permanent(i.e.should be available throughout the assessment-please ensure access rights-and the internal and external moderation process,until Sept 2026).The video   description should only include:

1    As title "HUMS2017 Project"

ii.   Student number

c.A      stable  link  to  the  film/excerpt  with  the  original  score. Alternatively,students       can   include the original film after their edited version(please,note that the original film length will not count for the 10-minutes minimum length.)

d.A  short  introduction/description/contextualisation  of  the  original  film/excerpt(max.300 words),including title,director/original composer,genre/historical  period  and  brief description of the original piece.

e.A biographical list,including timeline,description and source of the musical excerpts used in their score-e.g.3:07 Excerpt from Johann Sebastian Bach, Cello Suite No.1 in G major,BWV  1007.Retrieved  from

7.Students should also submit a full video through Moodle(less than 250MB)with a 2-3minutes excerpt/scene of their choosing,to be showcased during the Music in Film Festival on 21st November 2025.

8.The deadline for submission of the project is 10 November 2025,23:59pm.Strictly no late submissions allowed.
