Assignment:

This 10-minute recorded research proposal is an opportunity for you to pitch your dissertation project clearly, persuasively, and professionally. It acts as an early diagnostic to ensure your topic is well-defined, appropriately scoped, and methodologically sound, and it provides your supervisor with a foundation for ongoing guidance.

You are not expected to have completed your research, but you must demonstrate a credible plan and show that you understand what you’re doing, why it matters, and how you will do it. It is designed to help you:

•   Clarify your research question and project direction.

•    Receive early feedback on the scope, feasibility, and methodology of your proposed study.

•    Practice communicating complex economic research ideas clearly and concisely.

You must prepare and submit a 10-minute PowerPoint presentation, narrated by you, in which you present your planned dissertation. The recording should feature clear slides (including visuals, bullet points, and references where needed), and you must narrate the slides verbally.

You should assume you are addressing an academic audience who understands economics research and your job is to convince that your project:

•   Tackles an important question

•    Is grounded in relevant literature

• Uses sound and feasible methods

• Is achievable within the dissertation timeline and available resources

You must address the following eight core tasks. These align with the requirements for high-quality dissertation planning.

1.   Background and context: Outline the broader issue your dissertation will address while identifying motivation

2.   Research question: Clearly state your main research question or hypothesis. Ensure your question is specific, focused, and answerable.

3.   Preliminary literature review: Highlight key themes, debates, and gaps in the existing literature while showing what gap your question addresses in the literature or policy debate.

4.   Methodology: Explain your planned research design (e.g. empirical, theoretical, mixed.) and why your chosen approach is appropriate for your question

5.   Data: Explain what kind of data you will use and identify your proposed data source(s), if any.

6.   Anticipated findings (or hypotheses): Explain what kinds of results you expect to find. These can be speculative but should be plausible and logically connected to your question and methods

7.   Challenges and limitations: Anticipate difficulties (e.g., data issues, model complexity, access constraints) and discuss how you plan to mitigate or manage these challenges.

8.   Timeline: Present a realistic schedule for completing the dissertation over Semester 2 identifying key milestones.

Upload your recorded presentation to CANVAS by the stated deadline. Include your student ID on the first slide. Use Microsoft PowerPoint or a compatible format (e.g. .pptx + video narration or exported video). Add full references either throughout the slides or on the final slide.
