Coursework

The coursework consists of 60% of the total grade.

You are required to take one 1 hour and 15 minutes mid-term quiz in Week 7 (15th of October 2025), which tests your understanding of the lessons covered in the previous weeks and it will give you 30% of your total grade.

Homework Assignment: 2 Linguistic journal articles (30%).

Instructions:

You are required to write a linguistic journal with 2 articles for the semester.  The journal is due at 23:59 p.m.  in the 11th week, namely 12th November, 2025.  Use Turnitin in Canvas to submit your pdf file with the following file name: LT222925A-yourname.pdf.  NO LATE SUBMISSION WILL BE GRADED.

The objective of the journal assignment is to sharpen your sensitivity to language system and communication in your immediate surrounding. You have to record your linguistic observation, and discussion.  You should be sensitive to different language uses in real life situation, be able to dig them out and tackle them professionally and academically.  The journal is to be written and typed in English with possible data in other languages. Glosses should be inserted for data in languages other than English or Chinese. Except for data in the appendix, an article should not exceed 1,000 words and the journal should consist of two articles on 2 separate linguistic issues.  You should try to make use of the analytic methods learnt in the course to write up the articles. They should reflect your sensitivity to language facts and daily usage in your language community.

What is to be recorded in the journal article?

A concise description of the linguistic phenomenon that rouses your curiosity (if you can identify and collect data of yours which are truly original, that is most appreciated), a brief literature survey about it (what other people have said about this before, if any), your discussion (linguistic analysis, trend of change, distribution, educational or other implication, relevance to your field of study, etc.) relevant reference materials (not included in the 1,000 word count).  The data could be listed in the appendix so they don't have be counted too.

You may use AI tools to learn about how to conduct your little piece of research, references, but you must collect your own data and perform your own analysis.  The extent of use of AI tools must be disclosed in the articles.  AI detection tools will be used to check your academic integrity.
