Term 4, 2025

Context

You are a high school student planning to attend university after completing high school. You are interested to pursue a Bachelor of Science in the future, and you have heard that university education can be expensive, so you want to

start planning your finances now to ensure you can afford to go to university.

-     The cost in the budgeting plan includes the tuition fees, textbooks, accommodation, transportation, and any other living expenses for your degree at your chosen university.

-     The course you have chosen to study in university is Bachelor of Science.

-     You will receive a scholarship of $5000 per year to assist with the cost of your study.

-     Your parents will be contributing $40 000 per year for your tuition fees.

-     You will be living on-campus in a student accommodation.

-     You have a part-time job.

-     You will be paying the fees as an international student.

You will be provided three lessons of class time for task completion.

Your teacher will collect a draft.

Students will sign a declaration of authenticity.

You will use plagiarism-detection software to submit your response.

Scaffolding

The approach to problem solving and modelling must be used (see next page).

Approach to problem-solving and modelling

Formulating a model involves the process of moving from the real world to the mathematical world.

During this stage you will need to:

•     Identify the objective

•     Design your mathematical model

List mathematical techniques or concepts used.

List observations and assumptions.

Solving involves selecting and applying mathematical concepts to solve the problem.

At this stage you will carry out the steps that you have identified and solve the problem.

Use mathematical techniques and concepts as identified in “Formulate” showing all working.

Evaluating and verifying involves considering the reasonableness of your solutions, checking for errors and identifying strengths and

limitations.

During this stage you need to:

•     Check solutions for reasonableness and accuracy

•     Consider strengths and limitations

•    Write a conclusion

Consider other ways to find the lengths and angles and check using these methods.

Communicating involves writing up your model and solution into a report.

Once you have answered all the questions you need to present your findings in a typed report. Use the headings of each of the stages to separate your report into three parts (Formulate, Solve, Evaluate and verify). You should also use

the headings printed in bold as subheadings in your report.
