Psychology of Religion
This course provides an introduction to the psychology of religion. Many people identify with religious groups or traditions and claim to have religious or spiritual experiences. This course explores how contemporary psychology research sheds light on human religiosity. Topics include: the development of religion in children, the relationship between religion and morality, rituals, altered states of consciousness, and religion and identity.
Course learning objectives
Students who pass this course should be able to:
1. Critically analyse classical and current debates in the psychology of religion.
2. Apply concepts and approaches from the psychology of religion to specific case studies.
3. Critically evaluate scholarly theories and approaches to the psychology of religion.
4. Effectively advance an argument on the psychological dimensions of religious data.
How this course is taught
This course will be taught fully online. Direct interaction with the course coordinator will be continually available, and encouraged, through the Nuku interface. Students will be expected to view pre-recorded online lectures, read set texts, and complete written responses and weekly quizzes.
This course is designed as an integral combination of lectures, readings, and assigned work. These components are complementary with one another, not redundant, and ALL components of the course are necessary for students to do well.
This course engages with the same content as RELI 226. The assessment tasks have been adjusted to meet the requirements of a 300-evel course.
