Assignment 2 – LOGO DESIGN – 10%

A logo is a brand symbol, made up of text and image. It helps us to identify brands/companies who they are, what they do and what they value most.

Logos are best designed as vectors (shapes that can be scaled up or down without pixelating), this is because a logo is used in so many ways on advertisements and billboards, on business cards and letter head, on merchandise like pens or t-shirts and so much more.

For this assignment you will be creating your own company and designing a logo and branding items for this business using Adobe Illustrator.

TASK ONE: CREATE A COMPANY

For this assignment we will be exploring BOTH Aotearoa (New Zealand) and a Design Aesthetic chosen at random. Pick an industry below, that relates to NZ Tourism:

· Food

· Activities

· Objects

1. Start a new Powerpoint presentation (ppt) and add your full name, student ID number and logo assignmentto the first slide.

2. Write the industry you have chosen on the second slide.

3. Choose what type of business you will create

What is the name of the design aesthetic and where was it created?
What imagery and colours are often used in this aesthetic?
What are some examples of popular graphic design, art, fashion, style etc that use the design aesthetic?

2. Search online for a company in Aotearoa (New Zealand) who is in the industry you have chosen. What do they sell/do? Where in NZ are they located? What does their branding look like? What key words do they use to describe their business? What words and images do they use in their advertising?

Add your short research notes to a slide in your ppt. 1- 2 ppt slide.

TASK THREE: INSPIRATION & IDEAS

Find 6 logos online that you think show GOOD design. All 6 logos must relate to the industry that you have chosen (the logo designs you are researching can be from anywhere in the world, they just need to be from the same industry you have chosen e.g. transportation).

Analyse these logos and answer the following questions for each logo:

1. How has the logo design used IMAGE?

2. How has the logo design used TYPOGRAPHY?

3. How has the logo design used COLOUR?

4. How have these design choices created meaning?

TASK FOUR: MOOD BOARD

A mood board is a collection of visual images for inspiration and understanding on your topic. You will also use the images in your mood board to help you create a colour palette.
YOU MUST INCLUDE IMAGERY RELATING TO NEW ZEALAND, THE AESTHETIC YOU HAVE SELECTED AND YOUR INDUSTRY IN THE ONE MOOD BOARD

1. Search online for images, graphics, advertisements, typography and words that relate to your industry and company.

2. Add these images and words to a new slide in your ppt.

3. Create a colour palette from the images you find – think about your target audience and the meaning of colour
