HPS201 Assignment
Task 3
Study 1
Specifically, recent evidence suggests that regular mindfulness practice may be associated with employee well-being. To test this, you take a sample of 200 Google employees and ask them how many mindfulness sessions they attended in the past year. You also ask them how many sick days they took.
The data from this study can be found in the file Mindfulness.omv. The variable Mindfulness indicates the number of mindfulness sessions each participant attended in the past year. The variable SickDays indicates the number of sick days each participant took.
Use jamovi to assist you in answering the following questions. If you justify your response based on jamovi output, refer to the relevant jamovi output in your response and provide the relevant statistical values in text (a screenshot alone is insufficient). You must only use the methods and analyses covered in the examinable content of this unit.
Study 1 - Questions
1. Plot the data in jamovi using a scatterplot and attach the relevant jamovi output to your submission. Based on the scatterplot alone, describe the type, direction, and strength of the association between the number of mindfulness sessions attended and the number of sick days taken. Justify your response. (3 Marks)
2. Conduct the appropriate analysis to investigate the association between the number of mindfulness sessions attended and the number of sick days taken. Attach the relevant jamovi output to your submission. Report the results of the analysis in APA format including all relevant information. (3 Marks)
3. Assume you are an Organizational Psychologist. Mindy, who works at Google, has proposed that the company should reduce the number of mindfulness sessions offered in the workplace as it may not be effective for improving employee wellbeing. Based on the results of this study, do you agree with Mindy? Justify your response. (1 Mark)
Study 2
Dr Insomnia is interested in variables that influence exam scores. She recruits a sample of university students and records their end of trimester exam score. The data from this study can be found in the file Insomnia.omv. Dr Insomina also records the following variables for each student:
|
Variable |
Description |
Type |
|
SocialMedia |
How much time (in minutes) did you spend on social media the night before the exam? |
Continuous |
|
VideoGames |
How many minutes did you spend playing video games the night before the exam? |
Continuous |
|
Sleep |
How many hours did you sleep the night before the exam? |
Continuous |
|
PracticeQuestions |
How many exam practice questions did you do in preparation for the exam? |
Continuous |
Study 2 – Questions
1. Of the variables measured, Dr Insomnia concludes that Sleep is the most relevant variable for explaining individual differences in exam scores. Based on the data collected, is Dr Insomnia correct? Justify your response by ranking the variables associated with exam scores from most relevant to least relevant and refer to an appropriate statistic to justify your response. Attach the relevant jamovi output to your submission, showing all steps and/or working out. (1.5 Marks)
2. Assume that the covariance between the variable Sleep and exam scores was 4 in Study 2. How much of the variability in exam scores would be explained by Sleep? Justify your response, showing all steps and/or working out, and attach the relevant jamovi output to your submission. (1.5 Marks).
