HPS201 Assignment

Task 1

Study 1

Research suggests that children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) often present with motor difficulties (Kaiser et al., 2015). Your task is to investigate this question empirically.

You recruit a sample of children with ADHD and a sample of children without ADHD. All children complete the Conners 3 ADHD rating scale, a measure of ADHD symptoms. You assess each child’s motor coordination using the Developmental Coordination Disorder Questionnaire (DCD-Q), a parent report measure developed to assist in the identification of motor difficulties.

Based on their DCD-Q scores, you classify each participant as having motor difficulites or not. The data from this study can be found in the file ADHD.omv.

Use jamovi to assist you in answering the following questions. If you justify your response based on jamovi output, refer to the relevant jamovi output in your response and provide the relevant statistical values in text (a screenshot alone is insufficient). You must only use the methods and analyses covered in the examinable content of this unit.

Study 1 - Questions

1. Conduct the appropriate statistical analysis to test if children with ADHD are more likely to present with motor difficulties relative to children without ADHD. Attach the relevant jamovi output to your submission. Report the results of the analysis in APA format including all relevant information. (4 Marks)

2. Based on the data from Study 1, what percentage of children who score above 42 on the Conners 3 present with motor difficulties? Answer this question using jamovi, showing all steps and/or working out, and attach the relevant jamovi output to your submission. (2 Marks)

Study 2

Dr House would like to know if playing computer games is related to ADHD in childhood.

To answer this question, Dr House asks Chase, her research assistant, to recruit a sample of children who regularly play computer games and a sample of children who don’t. For each child, Chase also records if they have been diagnosed with ADHD or not.

Chase then conducts a Chi-square analysis to test for an association between the variables ComputerGames (whether a child regularly plays computer games or not) and ADHD (whether a child has been diagnosed with ADHD or not). Chase provides Dr House with the following output:

Statistical Output

Based on the information provided to Dr House by her research assistant, Dr House reports the results of the analysis as follows:

A Chi-square Goodness of Fit Test was conducted to test if playing computer games is related to ADHD in childhood. The analysis suggested that children who regularly play computer games are significantly more likely to be diagnosed with ADHD than children who do not regularly play computer games, c2(df = 1, N = 65) = 4.20, p > .05, f = .25.

Study 2 - Questions

1. List any factual mistakes made by Dr House in the above statement. For each mistake, note why Dr House is incorrect. (2 Marks)

2. Re-write Dr House’s statement after correcting any mistakes made. (2 Marks)
