Academic Project
Enhancing Probability Education by Refining Interactive Visualisation Tools
Overall Aim / Goal:
This study will contribute to the enhancement of students' understanding and engagement with probability concepts by developing interactive visualisation tools. By incorporating conversational feedback from students who have volunteered to test the tools, the project aims to create a dynamic learning experience that bridges the gap between abstract mathematical theories and practical comprehension. This iterative approach ensures the tools are continuously improved to meet the diverse needs of learners and support both classroom instruction and independent study.
Project Duration:
Full-time over 1 semester, or part-time over 2 semesters.
Project Description:
Probability is a fundamental concept with significant applications in fields such as statistics, economics, medicine, and engineering. Despite its importance, many students face challenges in mastering probability due to gaps in prerequisite knowledge and an overreliance on static visualisation methods. Traditional teaching approaches, which often focus heavily on mathematical definitions and formulas, can make complex topics like joint and conditional probability harder to grasp and less engaging.
This project initially focused on developing interactive visualisation tools to address these challenges. In this extended phase, we will build upon that foundation by incorporating feedback from student volunteers who have used the tools during trials. By engaging students in structured conversations and surveys, we aim to gather insights into their experiences, challenges, and suggestions for improvement.
Data:
We already have data from 2024 and will continue to gather data in 2025.
Desired Output:
• The tool is expected to improve comprehension of complex probability concepts, enhance student engagement, and provide flexible teaching resources. Preliminary trials show they bridge the gap between abstract ideas and practical understanding, supporting both classroom learning and self- study.
• Dissertation/Report.
Preferred Skills - Who are we looking for?
This project would suit someone with a genuine interest in Statistics Education with skills in programming and developing tools.
Available Resources:
We already have some data from previous years. The candidate can get help from a supervision team comprising a probabilist, a statistics education researcher, and a professional teaching fellow.
Constraints:
We successfully had one graduate student on the preliminary stage of this project and believe there are no constraints to successfully completing this project.
