Academic Project
Investigating Interoperability Between Learning Management Systems
Overall Aim / Goal:
Investigating Interoperability between Learning Management Systems.
Project Duration:
Full-time over 1 semester, or part-time over 2 semesters.
Project Description:
A Learning Management System (LMS) is a software platform designed to facilitate the management and tracking of student learning. A crucial part of an LMS is its ability to support the creation, delivery, and grading of questions that aid in the learning process and assessment.
Creating quality questions is a time-consuming task that requires expert domain knowledge. Once such questions are created, academics may wish to share them to build large question pools. Unfortunately, there are several LMS platforms, each employing a different format for exporting and importing questions. Question and Test Interoperability (QTI) is a standardised format for creating, sharing, and exchanging assessment content. However, while some LMS platforms claim to support QTI, the exported content can rarely be imported seamlessly into a different LMS platform.
There are over two dozen LMS platforms (see R. Kraleva, M. Sabani, and V. Kralev, “An Analysis of Some Learning Management Systems,” Int. J. Adv. Sci. Eng. Inf. Technol., vol. 9, no. 4, pp. 1190–1198, Aug. 2019), making interoperability a challenging task.
The first goal of this project is to study the extent of the problem — that is, to systematically analyse how interoperable LMS platforms are in the context of question sharing. The second goal is to investigate machine learning models to assist in translating exports from one system so they can be imported into another system.
Such B2B (business-to-business) data conversions are generic and have been the subject of several research papers. In addition, commercial tools such as:
1. https://aws.amazon.com/b2b-data-interchange/, and
2. https://www.informatica.com/products/data-integration/b2b-data- exchange.html
are available to address similar challenges.
Data:
To be obtained by the students using the LMS platforms we have access to (some of the platforms, e.g., Sakai, are open source, so one can install such systems for data collection).
Desired Output:
• A generic mechanism for interoperability between LMS platforms.
• Dissertation/Report.
Preferred Skills – Who are we looking for?
Strong programming skills.
