Project 2 Detailed Requirements

Project 2 is the continued development and implementation from last semester.  This stage of the project should include the components listed below.  This list is not definitive and you can add any additional services that you deem suitable for your own network.  

There are two parts to the project.

· Network configuration.  This will largely be implemented in PacketTracer but some parts that are not possible in PT will be implemented in CML

· Servers & AD.  This will be implemented in XOA and will include the implementation of the AD design from semester 1.  This will include scripts for generating the accounts for all 200 users and will also include home folders and GPOs.

1. Packet Tracer

Packer tracer should be used to implement your design.  It should include the following:

Hosts (wired, wireless, pc’s, printers, servers)

Switches (with VLANs) configuration

Router Configuration for (interfaces, passwords, VLANs, Routing Protocols, Access Control Lists)

WAN Configuration (for NAT, PAT with Overload, WAN protocols such as HDLC or PPP and any WAN technology)

The Packet tracer implementation will be presented in the middle of the term.  

2. Security

Security should be addressed and incorporated using any/all of the following:

Network Security

Firewalls

Authentication (using login scripts)

Others ????

Students will be required to demonstrate how security has been implemented in their network.

3. Maintenance and Management of Network

SMNP

4. Additional Services

It is expected that you consider implementing 1 or more of the following services (dependent on your project):

Mail

Moodle

VOIP

VPN configuration

5. Documentation

A project report is required (similar to Project 1).   You must use the Project_Template_0910.doc Word file as a template (this is in Moodle.dkit.ie, Project 1 module).

Your document should include the following:

Title page – Name, Year, Class, Project Type, Project Title, Date.

Table of Contents – showing the following

(i) Project Description – A brief outline of your project area and an overview of your organisation, its users and their requirements.

(ii) Packet Tracker  – This should include a description / explanation / diagrams of packet tracer including VLAN; DHCP; Switch Configuration, Router configuration for Ethernet Interface, Serial Interface, VLANs, NAT, PAT and WAN protocols, etc.

(iii) Security – discussion of security implemented e.g. ACLs; Proxy, Authentication, Authorization, etc.

(iv) Network Management –SMNP, WMI, etc.

(v) Additional Services – any additional services you implemented including non-windows client (Ubuntu or other); Moodle; Help Desk, etc.

(vi) Active Directory – This will include a description/explanation/diagrams of the AD implementation.

(vii) Summary  – A brief summary of your experience and future plans for your project.

(viii) Bibliography & References List and briefly summarize your major sources of information from books, websites, articles & journals etc.

Note: Your document should not include any code unless snippets are used to illustrate a particular feature.  You should not include code as a “filler”.  Use an Appendix for any configurations you may submit (this includes VBScript, Router, Switch Configurations).  Remember all configurations must be commented.  Your document should be approximately 30+ pages.
