Lesson Activity: Chemical Reactions

Lesson Activity

Chemical Reactions

This activity will help you meet these educational goals:

You will develop a model to construct an explanation for how atoms and molecules combine to form new substances in chemical reactions.

You will make sense of problems and work to solve them.

You will reason abstractly and quantitatively.

Directions

Read the instructions for this self-checked activity. Type in your response to each question, and check your answers. At the end of the activity, write a brief evaluation of your work.

Activity

In this activity, you'll use a simulation to learn about chemical reactions between atoms and molecules. Get started by following these steps:

1. Go to the simulation Balancing Chemical Equations.

2. Click the simulation and select the introduction. Balance the three equations using the balance scale and graph tools.

3. When you've finished all three equations, go to the game and select level 2. Complete all five challenges.

Now use what you learned from the simulation to answer the following questions.

Part A

Based on your experience in the simulation, what do the numbers 3 and 4 refer to in 3NH4?

Part B

The scales shown in the introduction measure mass, or the amount of matter in a particular object. The scientific law of conservation of mass states that matter cannot be created or destroyed during a chemical reaction, but it can change from one form to another. Did the simulation support this scientific law? Explain why or why not.

Part C

Precise measurements are important for scientific accuracy. Use the game to explain why precise measurement of reactants is important to form the desired products in a chemical reaction.

Part D

Based on the simulation, write a definition for the term "balanced chemical equation.”

Part E

The following equation shows the correct molecules formed in the reaction, but the products are incorrect.

CH4 +202→H2O+ CO2

How would you correct the products? Explain your reasoning.
