Lectures

There are no lectures in this course, except for one in the first week of classes that will introduce you to the course and provide a rundown on how to research and write an empirical paper.

Workshops

At various points through the term, we will get together in small groups to present and discuss your progress.  Workshops will take one oftwo forms: 1) each student gives a brief presentation, and      others will take turns providing comments; 2) students will give a longer presentation without peer  comments.

The university has told us that classes are remote until at least January 31.  To avoid disruptions in     the course by switching between delivery modes, I have decided that all meetings in this course are remote over Zoom.

•   Course Description

The course focuses on the integration of knowledge into the application of economic theory and econometrics  to  a   specific  economic  problem. Students will  complete  a  written  project  and presentation.

EC481 requires students to write a research paper under the direction of the course instructor. In the process of writing the paper, students will complete a paper proposal, a summary of preliminary analysis, and extended outline. The students will also be required to participate in workshops where they will provide feedback on other students’ projects and receive feedback on their own.

•   Learning Objectives

The Department ofEconomics has developed a set of learning objectives that we expect students to meet by the end ofthe economics program.  The objectives covered in this course are:

•   Late Penalties

Written submissions at due at 11:59pm on the assigned date. For each 24-hour period (or part-there-of) after the due date and time, your grade will be reduced by 20 percentage point. For example, if you hand in your written submission 30 hours late, your written submission cannot receive a grade higher than 60% of the total (100% minus 2x20 percentage points). Submissions handed in more than 5 days (120 hours) late, will automatically receive a grade of 0 (100% minus 5x20 percentage points).

Note that some of the workshops are structured so that your peers give you feedback on your work. To give them enough time to read and think about your submission, it is important that you do not submit your work late.

•   Academic Integrity

You are reminded that the University will levy sanctions on students who are found to have committed, or have attempted to commit, acts of academic or research misconduct.  You are expected to know what constitutes an academic offense, to avoid committing such offenses, and to take responsibility for your academic actions.  For information on categories of offenses and types of penalty, please consult the relevant section of the Undergraduate Academic Calendar.  If you need clarification of aspects of University policy on Academic and Research Misconduct, please consult your instructor.

Wilfrid Laurier University uses software that can check for plagiarism.  Students may be required to submit their written work in electronic form and have it checked for plagiarism.

•   Accessible Learning

Students with disabilities or special needs are advised to contact Laurier’s Accessible Learning Centre for  information  regarding  its  services  and  resources.    Students  should  review  the  Calendar  for information regarding all services available on campus.

•   Student Privacy

Wilfrid Laurier University uses a range of technologies to facilitate in-person and remote                 instruction. Zoom is currently used for remote course delivery, including lectures, seminars,             and group office hours, which may be recorded, stored and shared through MyLearningSpace for     access by students in the course. For these course activities, students are permitted to turn offtheir   cameras or use an alternative name to maintain their privacy after they have confirmed this with      their instructor. Student personal information is collected and used in the course in accordance with University policies and the Notice of Collection, Use or Disclosure ofPersonal Information.

•   COVID Information

There are several important COVID-related pieces of information I want to bring to your attention if we do end up back in person for some reason:

Masks: The university face covering policy says that students are required to wear a face covering in   all common-use indoor spaces, which includes classrooms. Unless you have an accommodation as       per Policy 2.3, you are expected to wear your face covering at all times in the classroom, and also        while transitioning to and from classrooms.  If you have an accommodation, please tell me in advance (no details needed - just tell me you have an accommodation).  If any student is not wearing or not       properly wearing their face covering, I will ask them politely to please wear it according to the             university policy.  If at that point any student refuses, I will leave the classroom and continue               instruction remotely until everyone agrees to abide by the university policy.

Distancing: Please ensure that you keep distanced from others when you enter and leave the classroom, and when seated.

Interactions in Class: In normal times, students often approached me before and after class with      questions, which I welcomed.  During COVID times, I ask that students not approach me in the       classroom for any reason.  If you have a question or need to speak with me, we can discuss it while you are in your seat, or we can schedule to meet privately over Zoom.
