Part I (60 points): Find the solution of Maxwell’s Equation.
Let E(x,t) and H(x,t) be electric and magnetic fields in Q = Ω×(0, ∞),
where Ω ⊂ R3 is a bounded set. Then E(x,t) and H(x,t) satisfy Maxwell’s Equations:
Et = ∇ × H, (x,t) ∈ Q,
Ht + ∇ × E = 0, (x,t) ∈ Q,
N × E(x,t) = 0, (x,t) ∈ ∂Ω × (0, ∞),
E(x,0) = E0 (x), H(x,0) = H0 (x), x ∈ Ω .
where E0 (x) and H0 (x) are given initial electric and magnetic fields with ∇ · E0 (x) = 0, ∇ · H0 (x) = 0,x ∈ Ω, N is the outward normal direction on ∂Ω.
(a) Prove
∇ · E(x,t) = 0, ∇ · H(x,t) = 0, (x,t) ∈ Ω × (0, ∞).
Using this fact, prove E(x,t) and H(x,t) satisfy
Ett − ∆E = 0, Htt − ∆H = 0, (x,t) ∈ Q.
(b) Prove that a solution (E(x,t), H(x,t)) of Maxwell’s Equations is also a solution to the following problem:
Ett − ∆E = 0, (x,t) ∈ Q,
N × E(x,t) = 0, ∇ · E(x,t) = 0, (x,t) ∈ ∂Ω × (0, ∞),
E(x,0) = E0 (x), Et(x, 0) = ∇ × H0 (x),x ∈ Ω .
Conversely, a solution E(x,t) and H(x,t) defined by
H(x,t) = H0 (x) − Z0t ∇ × E(x,τ)dτ,
forms a solution to Maxwell’s equations.
(c) Let
Ω = [0,L1] × [0,L2] × [0,L3]
be a rectangular in R3. Use separation of variables to find the solution representation for the solution E(x,t) of the following problem:
Ett − ∆E = J(x,t), (x,t) ∈ Q,
N × E(x,t) = 0, ∇ · E(x,t) = 0, E(x,0) = E0 (x), Et(x,0) = E1 (x),
(x,t) ∈ ∂Ω × (0, ∞),
x ∈ Ω ,
where J(x,t), E0 (x), E1 (x) are given vector functions.
