Assignment and Term Paper - Newspaper Article Analysis and Commentary

In this pair of assignments, you will critically analyze a newspaper article and then submit an APA style paper reporting your findings.

The article you will be analyzing is “Produce Prices Down in California, Report Says” by Tom Burfield.  You will be comparing your calculated elasticities with those found in literature.

Below are the instructions and rubrics for the Assignment and the Term Paper.

Assignment — 10 Points — Due November 3 at 11:55pm

Instructions

Answer questions about the economic content in the article.  Submit your answers in order on 8.5”x11” college rule paper, handwritten, single sided, with your name and student number in   the top right corner of the first page.  Scan your work and submit as a single pdf document.

Presentation counts.  Messy work that is difficult to read will not be graded.  Graphs must be drawn with a ruler.

Marks will be deducted for not following the submission guidelines.

Term Paper — 20 Points — Due December 7 at 11:55pm

Instructions

Conduct a critical analysis of the information presented in the news article, with a specific focus on the calculated elasticities. Your final paper should be 500 - 600 words and written in       APA style (7th edition).  The word count does not include the title page, references, and table.       Your paper will include a title page, main body, and reference list.  Do not include any section       headings other than the title and references.

Include a word count at the end ofyour paper.  This should be at the bottom ofthe final page ofthe main body.

Rubric

Sources (3 points)

Use the calculated values, the Price and Mittelhammer article, and two other academic       sources that report elasticities for all ofthe fruits that were used in the Assignment. You will get    one point for listing in the table the correct elasticities from Price and Mittelhammer. You will get one point for finding a second high quality article as a source of elasticity values. You will get       one point for finding a third high quality article as a source of elasticity values.

APA Style (6 points)

All aspects ofAPA style will be evaluated.

(2points) You will get two points for preparing a paper that looks like an APA paper at      first glance.  Margins, spacing, titles, running heads, and other items will be evaluated by quickly scanning through the paper.  Each significant error will result in a loss of 0.5 points.  Please          follow the “APA Template” lecture exactly ifyou want to earn these points.

(3points) Each ofyour references will be evaluated, and each is worth one point.  For each reference, the point will be lost ifthere are two significant APA errors.

(1point) In text citations will be evaluated. Two significant errors will result in the point being lost.
