The Purpose

There are hundreds of different weight loss methods found on the internet. Some have scientific merit and are safe to use while others are completely bogus and could potentially kill you. Understanding how a weight-loss method works scientifically can help you determine if it is something you should try. This assessment requires you to evaluate and critique a weight-loss method to determine if you would recommend it to someone. This assessment also helps you to develop critical thinking and written and visual communication skills.

The Task

Your friend Amy wants to lose weight quickly and has decided to use a weight-loss drug. She thinks the weight loss drug Lorcaserin would be the best option for her, but she is having trouble understanding how this drug works and how it leads to weight loss. Since you have been learning about weight loss and metabolism in this course, she has decided to ask you for some advice. You are required to produce a written document for Amy usingthe template providedto answer some specific questions she has for you.

Expectations and Marking Criteria

Generative AI Use: You may use generative AI to complete this assessment task in anyway you see fit. The only section you cannot use AI for is the ‘Assessment Completion Process’ section below which is a reflection section that must be written in your own words.

The written document must cover all the following aspects. Total marks available is 50.

Description of the drug and how it works (13 marks)

• Describe the drug: when was it discovered, who should use the drug and at what dosage (3 marks)

• Using an appropriate diagram describe the mechanism of action of this drug (5 marks)

• Explain how this mechanism of action leads to weight loss. You must refer to the content from lectures to answer this section (5 marks)

Scientific Studies (8 marks)

• Include results of two different scientific studies done to measure the effectiveness of the drug. You must provide sufficient details about the study to understand the study design, methods, findings and what the results mean. The document must also contain screencaps of the journal articles you used as seen below. (8 marks)

Critique of the weight loss drug (7 marks)

• Provide a critique of the weight loss method that is backed up by evidence from your research. You should focus on the following:

o Potential general side effects associated with the drug? (1 mark)

o Does it lead to or eliminate the risk of specific diseases? (2 marks)

o Does the drug allow you to get all the necessary nutrients. (2 marks)

o sustainability of using the drug long term and whether the weight loss will remain once you stop taking the drug? (2 marks)

Conclusion (5 marks)

• Would you recommend Amy use this drug? Give reasons as to why you came to this conclusion. You should also use Amy's stats to help support your conclusion (5 marks)

Creative Appeal of the written document (5 marks)

• You will be rewarded for creativity and how visually appealing the slides are.

• Your critique should present information succinctly.

• Any images used other than decorative ones must have a figure legend along with a reference to the original image.

• The information you present on the slides must be in your own words. You cannot copy information directly from websites or other online sources.

References (2 marks)

You should include a full reference list done in any style.

• Must include in-text references.

• A minimum of 6 references is required.

• These references are not expected to be just scientific journal articles, but they must be from reputable sources, for example, articles published in The Conversation or Harvard Health. Other reliable sources include Learn.Genetics, articles publihed on university or research institute websites (will have .edu in the web address), such as UNSW Newsroom, or government websites (will have .gov in the web address).
