Select a non-financial company listed on the London Stock Exchange in 2023 that you like and use the company as a case to answer the following questions:

Question 1

(a) Describe the types of finance used by the company and the sources from which the finance was obtained.

Use data from recent annual reports of the company, and other sources, to support your answer. (40 marks)

(b) Critically discuss the extent to which the financing strategy of the company is consistent with finance theories and recent research evidence.

Support your answer with relevant theoretical and empirical research evidence from the literature. (60 marks)

Module Learning Outcomes

The learning outcomes of the module are as follows:

Students who complete the module successfully should -

(a) Understand and apply the concept of time value of money.

(b) Be able to appraise project investment proposals and critically evaluate the effects of investment decisions of firms on their market values under certainty and uncertainty.

(c) Understand and apply techniques of valuation of stocks, bonds and options.

(d) Be able to assess the potential impacts of financing and dividend decisions of firms on their costs of capital and market values. The students should also have critical knowledge and understanding of the capital structure and dividend policy literatures.

(e) Be able to critically apply a range of asset and option pricing models and know their strengths and limitations; and

(f) Be able to assess efficiency of financial markets; and demonstrate critical knowledge and understanding of the key issues in the mergers and acquisitions, behavioural finance and digital finance.

This assignment will be used to assess learning outcome (d) stated above.

The requirements of the assignment are as follows

(a) the assignment should contain between 1,900 and 2,100 words.  Some marks will be deducted if your assignment is below, or over, the word limit;

(b) the assignment must include a title page (with only student ID number stated on it), a table of contents and a bibliography which includes the full references of all articles and books that are cited in the assignment;

(c) The assignment must also have a signed cover sheet confirming that you have read and understood the regulations on cheating and acknowledged the work of others.   A copy of the cover sheet is available on CANVAS.

(d) one electronic copy of the assignment must be uploaded on CANVAS before 12 noon on Friday, 08/12/2023.

(e) in order to comply with the regulations on anonymity, please state only your ID number on your assignment, but do not state your name(s);

(f) keep a duplicate copy of your assignment at all times , in case one copy is lost or infected by a computer virus.   No extension will be granted on the ground that the memory stick containing your assignment is lost or infected by a computer virus;

(g) if there is any problem with our computer network which may prevent you from meeting the deadline stated above, you should obtain a written confirmation from one of our IT staff about the problem and attach it to your assignment.  You should submit your assignment as soon as possible after the problem has been solved;

(h) five marks will be deducted for each day of lateness, unless permission for late submission is granted before the deadline by the Wellbeing Team;

(i) permission of extension obtained from any other person will  not be accepted; and

(j) provisional result of the assignment will be released by 10/01/2024.
