Assignment #2 Hypothesis

Due Jan 26, 5 PM

A hypothesis is a provisional statement to be tested by research, and the primary purpose of research is to test hypotheses. Therefore, a hypothesis must be testable. In sociology, hypotheses formulated to examine the existence or characteristics of relationships between variables. Sometimes, hypotheses may specify scope conditions, delineating the circumstances under which the hypothesized relationship between variables is expected to be valid.

This is a couple of examples of sociological hypothesis:

1. Among children aged 10-15, use of social media is negatively related to the feeling of social isolation.

2. The use of social media improves Canadian elders’ level of social belonging.

For #1, independent variable is social media use, dependent variable is social isolation, scope condition, children aged 10-15

#2, IV social media use, DV social belonging, SC Canadian elders

A. For each of the following hypotheses, identify independent and dependent variables, scope condition (if any), and unit of analysis.

Hyp1. In the US, communities with greater income inequality also have higher rates of crime.

Hyp2. Adult people’s perception of spiritual well-being is positively affected by the religious participation in their childhood.

Hyp3. Racial profiling by law enforcement agencies contributes to disparities in incarceration rates between Whites and non-Whites in metropolitan areas in Canada.

Hyp4. The average length of education for women in developing countries correlates with the level of democracy in those nations.

B. Create your own hypothesis and identify its independent variable, dependent variable, attributes of each variable, scope condition (if any), and unit of analysis. You may use the research topic you chose for the last week’s assignment (Assignment #1).

C. Visit Statistics Canada’s website page where you find General Social Survey (GSS) PUMF datasets. https://www150.statcan.gc.ca/n1/pub/45-25-0001/index-eng.htm

Select and name two GSS cycle topics and its year(s) that you want to use for your own research project.
For example, GSS-Family 2017, GSS-Social Identity 2020

D. Download a dataset (its zip file) by clicking a reference year of a GSS dataset; and examine its codebook. Based on variables listed in the codebook, create your own hypothesis and identify its independent variable, dependent variable, attributes of each variable, and scope condition (if any).

In sum, here are what you will submit:

A. A completed table.

B. Your own hypothesis with the specification of IV, attributes of IV, DV, attributes of DV, SC, UA.

C. Name your two preferred choices of GSS topic.

D. Your own hypothesis based on a GSS codebook with the specification of IV, attributes of IV, DV, and attributes of DV.
