Participation (10%)

You could contribute to the effective learning through oral and/or written participation. Both oral and written participation are voluntary. In the management learning process,  most times there is no right or wrong answer. We credit all your attempts and efforts.

Oral participation. Your participation in class is vital because it stimulates both you and  your peers’ learning. Therefore, we expect you to actively involve yourself in all types of class activities. Participation in class includes (a) answering/asking a question, (b) making a constructive comment or suggestion, and (c) sharing relevant experiences.

Written participation. Participation in a writing form supplements the oral one, especially for students (a) who are willing to contribute but hesitate to speak out in public, or (b) who do not receive a speaking opportunity in class. Written participation will be posted on blackboard every Thursday and will be due next Tuesday. In the writing, you need to pick a discussed concept and reflect an experience or observation to specify that concept in practice. Please limit your writing in 250 words. You do not need to submit it unless you really have something to say.

Discussion Notes (15%)

We will read and analyze three cases during the semester. In order to facilitate a good class discussion, you are required to hand in discussion notes for the three cases (5% for each).

Templates for discussion notes will be posted on blackboard.

The discussion notes must be submitted before class on blackboard. Late discussion notes will not be accepted.

Exam 1 (25%) and Exam 2 (25%)

The two tests are fixed-date in-class exams. In principle, there will be no make-up test, so it is better for you to schedule your calendar taking the tests into consideration.

Both tests will examine what is covered in class only, including any information delivered in any format during the class time, rather than merely the content in the textbook. Test 1 will examine what we cover in the first half of the course only, and Test 2 will examine the second half of the course only. Generally, there will be no overlap between the two tests.

Both tests will last 70 minutes. The question paper will consist of 30 multiple choice questions (60%; 2% each) and 2 short essay questions (40%; 20% each). For multiple choice questions, you need to pick only one answer that best fits the question and mark down your answers on the answer sheet. For short essay questions, you need to write your answers in the answer book, with no more than one A4 page for each question. We  will provide you with a review note, as well as sample questions and answers in advance for review purpose.

Both tests will be closed-book exams, in which you should not (a) look at the textbook, slides, or the review note, (b) bring cheat sheets, (c) search dictionaries, (d) use electronic devices, or (e) communicate with others.

Team Project (25%)

In a group, you will analyze an issue that is currently taking place and being reported in the news or that has recently taken place (within the previous year), and that involves concepts covered in this course. As a group, you will present your analysis and recommendations to the class. Your analysis should include:

.    A concise summary of the issue.

.    An analysis of the OB concept(s) involved in the situation. Apply the

appropriate concept(s) and think critically about the way in which this situation does or does not illustrate the theories and research that you have learned about.

.    Analyze how the parties involved could perform more effectively based on what you have learned about the related OB concepts. Make recommendations based on what you have learned in this course.

Sources  for the analysis  should be  at least  5  articles  from reputable newspapers  and magazines, i.e. The New York TimesThe Wall Street Journal etc., and should be listed in a references section at the end of the presentation. References should be written according to APA style guidelines. Groups will be assigned via Blackboard. In addition, your group will be required to submit a group launch document that will be available on Blackboard.

Your presentation will be judged on both the content of your analysis as per the three points above, and the quality of your presentation style, which includes the quality and layout of your slides, your public-speaking, the organization of the presentation, and the overall professionalism of your group’s presentation. Specifically:

Group Project Oral Presentations. Each and every member in your group must participate in the oral presentation. Don’t read slides to the audience and don’t have wordy slides that the audience tries to read while you present. Do use key words or  phrases and do use lots of graphics. Make it interesting and professional. Rehearse!

Important considerations:

1. Please ensure that you speak loudly and clearly and that you rehearse your presentation.

2. Make sure you introduce your team members and your topic.

3. Use your time wisely! Points will be deducted if your presentation goes over the allotted time and if your overtime becomes excessive, I will have to stop your presentation in order to accommodate the other groups presenting.

4. I prefer that you not use any note cards during your presentation. Remember, you are only speaking for a few minutes.

Contribution (5%). You will rate the contribution of all team members (including yourself) at the end of the term. It is a critical practice to recognize contributors and identify free riders. If you do not complete this evaluation, you will not receive the  contribution grade. The average score from all evaluators will be your score of contribution to the team project.

Product (20%). The instructor will evaluate the product performance of a team. Members of the same team will receive the same score for the product. The evaluation will focus on the extent to which your team (a) summarizes the news informatively and concisely,   (b) introduces the OB concepts accurately, (c) conceptualizes the news to the perspective correctly, (d) applies the OB concepts to explain, predict, or influence the practice logically, and (e) presents together cohesively and professionally.
